Checking in with Engineering

634 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Transitions
Location: Main Engineering
Timeline: Shortly after 'Finding a Replacement'

Karma returned to the ship and tried to decide where he should go first. He wanted to check with all of the department heads before they left the base. He paused in the corridor and looked around. He'd been wandering around the ship and realized he was close to Main Engineering. He nodded to himself and changed direction. A couple minutes later he stepped into engineering and paused to look around.

Kalyka stopped and looked at Karma. She smiled. He really was a nice guy. Then she frowned; there was something different about him. Still smiling, she walked over to him and saw his new pip. "Well, hello, Commander. How are you doing today?"

Karma looked at her and smiled. "I'm doing well, thank you. Do you have a few minutes? Or am I interrupting something?"

"Sure. Come into my office." She led him to her office, and stood aside so the new red commander could enter first. When the door was closed, she faced him. "So what's up, Karma?"

"I just wanted to stop by and see how things were going," he said to her as he looked around the office.

She couldn't help but grin; he was a sweet guy, but was that really why he was here? "Everything's going fine. It's no different than it was yesterday. Met my assistant chief. He seems pretty competent."

Karma nodded and smiled. "What about the rest of the staff?" he asked her. "Any problems?"

She shook her head. "No, everyone is fine."

"How's the ship?" he asked her. "Anything serious that I need to be aware of?"

She cocked her hip as she shifted her weight to the right foot and put her hand on her hip as she considered. "The holodeck safeties were offline for a while, but it was fixed, as was a problem with the replicators on Deck 2. Other than that, it has been mainly isolinear chips and gelpacks."

"Is there anything you need while we're docked?" Karma asked her, looking at her and smiling.

She shook her head. "I think I have everything I need. Thank you, Commander." He was her friend, but he was still her superior on duty.

Karma looked at her and nodded. He'd actually hoped there would be something for him to deal with. "Is there anything else you'd like to discuss while I'm here?"

She frowned still smiling. "I know you didn't come here just to talk shop. What's up, Karma?"

"Well," Karma said to her. "I am visiting all the department heads to get to know them and find out of they need anything. I'd also like to know if you'd like to have dinner tonight."

Kalyka hesitated for a moment. They were just starting to be friends. Still...he was a nice guy and he was cute... "Alright. When?"

"After your shift?" he suggested.

She nodded. "Sure. Where are we having dinner? The messhall or the lounge?"

"Why don't we meet in the lounge," he said as he stood up.

"Alright. Is this a date or..." She left it trailing because she wasn't quite sure of his intentions.

"It's just a dinner between friends," he said to her.

She nodded, surprised that she felt a little disappointed. "Alright. I'll meet you there. 1700?"

"Sounds good," he said with a nod. "Is there anything else you'd like to discuss?"

She pressed her lips together, trying not to chuckle at his new excitement. "No, sir."

"In that case I'll let you get back to work," Karma said, moving to the door. "If you need anything don't hesitate to let me know."

"Sure thing." She watched him go, thinking that it couldn't have happened to a better guy.
