Mission: Transitions
Location: Counselor's Office

Karma walked through the corridors and tried to avoid conversations as much as possible with many of the crew. He wasn't in a very good mood and really didn't want to talk to anyone until he reached his destination. He paused outside the door to the Counselor's office. He took a deep breath and pressed the chime.

Erin was sitting at her desk, strumming a few chords on her guitar and humming to herself when the chime shrilled.
Setting the guitar to one side, she got up and answered the door herself. ''Lieutenant Sinclair, come in.'' She said in a surprised tone with a smile, waving him cheerfully into the room. ''How can I help?''

Karma looked at her for a moment then said, "I hope I'm not interrupting anything, but I needed someone to talk to."

Erin shook her head and gestured towards a chair, returning to her own and sitting down expectantly.
''Not at all, its my job to be the go-to guy on the ship after all.''
She took a sip of coffee. ''So what do you need to talk about? If there's anything you feel uncomfortable talking about, just say so and I wont push it.''

"I feel like people go out of their way to avoid me and it's getting annoying," he replied.

Erin raised an eyebrow in surprise. That's not what she expected to hear.
''Why?'' She asked curiously, giving him her full attention. ''I didn't think that federation officers would be as petty as to ignore someone for no good reason. Are you new here, or was there an incident that may have provoked this avoiding?''

"I think it's the uniform," Karma admitted. "People seem to have a bad impression of intelligence officers."

Erin chuckled. ''You got that right.'' She agreed, leaning back in her chair.
''As much as I hate to say it, there are a lot of negative stereotypes around people in your job.''
She shrugged. ''Well it may seem infantile advice but the best thing to do is to prove that you're different, above the stereotype. Try to mingle with the crew. I know its unfair to ask you to go out of your way when others may be sterotyping you, but sadly most predjudices dont break down in any other way.''
She smiled reassuringly. ''I think you'll find a few people on board who dont care about your rank or occupation.''

"If there are people on board like that then I haven't been able to find them," he said to her. "It would be nice to find someone that would look past the uniform and give me a chance."

Erin shook her head. ''I gaurentee you.'' She swore firmly. ''There'll be a few people. Starfleet cannot be made up entirely of bigots.''
She smiled at him. ''For one, I really dont care what uniform a person wears as long as they're a decent person. Tell you what, if you ever need someone to talk to or a sparring partener in the holodeck or whatever, just give me a call.''

Karma looked at her and nodded. "I'll take you up on that," he said to her. "I should really get back to work though," he added as he stood up. "Thank you for your time."

Erin nodded and smiled, standing up to see him out.
''Anytime, Leiutenant. I hope I helped.''
