Suddenly Kara stopped. She'd felt something... another mind. It was faint, but it was definitely there. She reached out to see if she could get a general direction and moved forward. "Private, there's someone down here. Get the medic."
[NEW]
She moved forward around a bend where she could hear water dripping. She was surprised to find a small underground pool. Lying beside it was a man.
Ewan shook his head slowly as he groggily came to. He couldn't really open his eyes, as he found out rather quickly that his headache rapidly got worse the more light that was in his eyes. He could hear movement, and as he slowly turned his head from side to side, he thought he could make out one, maybe two sets of footsteps. 'It can't get any worse than this,' he thought to himself. 'Might as well say something and figure out if I need to start swearing or showing gratitude.'
"Umm, hello? I don't know if you understand me, but I took a pretty big knock on the head, and I am thinking that I might have a broken leg. Would you mind helpin' a fella out?"
Kara looked at Trent to be sure he was paying attention. She signaled to him to keep an eye on the guy. "Who are you and where are you from?" She reached out to him telepathically. ~Don't talk. Save your strength. Just think the answer. I'll pick up on it.~
She turned to see the medic coming down the tunnel. "Over here," she called.
Corpsman Guinparra had not said much after landing, which was normal for his quiet nature, but when the Marine waved him over he instantly went from a slow walk to a mad sprint, then executed a slide that would have made a baseball coach proud, stopping perfectly next to Kara. Though he had unclipped his field medical kit rather expertly the sand had jammed the clasp holding his tricorder, so as he struggled with it he turned to her.
"For the lova Deneb... Sense anything ma'am? The dust jammed the clasp, might have to do this the old fashioned way."
Kara stopped and concentrated. She normally didn't pay too much attention to what was around her -- except in cases like this where there was nothing and then a human male. "The man... I think he's Starfleet. Us..." She paused, eyes wide. "The creature is very primitive. It isn't hostile... seems to feel threatened. I'm only getting some very rudimentary emotions." She shook her head. "Let's get him back to the ship."
By that time Guinparra had gotten his medical tricorder free and was rapidly scanning the man. It didn't take him long to find a major problem.
"Can't move him yet, he has an arterial fissure in his leg. He's slowly bleeding out of it, I need to repair the artery and relieve some of the pressure in his leg before we move him, unless we can get him transported out of here and directly to sickbay."
Guinparra didn't even bother to wait for an answer, instead he pulled out a sub-dermal sonic agitator to break up any clots, then got to work repairing the artery as well as draining away the excess blood in the outlying tissues. Once the subsiding pressure was relieved he could assess the broken femur. It was not good but not as bad as it could have been, however it was going to require a quick re-set. Looking up at the patient he gave him the news.
"Well, the artery is closed and the blood is drained away, but I'm going to have to put a force field splint on this for now. Before that though I have to re-set that bone, and unfortunately I used most of the analgesics on everybody else back at the crash site, so I'll have to do it manually. That means no painkillers.
"Sergeant Melo, you're a telepath, is there any sort of mental block you can throw on his pain while I re-set?"
"Damn tha bloody pain meds, just git it doone. I will live wit a wee bit o pain." He smiled, a little weakly and grasped the nearest hard object. "Let's do it. Nae more hesitation."
Kara could ease his pain, but she admired a person who was willing to tough it out, so she did nothing.
Guinparra nodded at first, then grinned a little. Another doctor he had served under was also, according to him, a 'raging Scot." and he couldn't resist affecting an accent.
"Alrecht 'en bijobs, aam gonnae coont tae thee 'en re-sit th' bain. a body..."
Except he never even got to two before he shifted his leg in a rather violent matter, forcing the broken ends of his femur in roughly the same fashion as they were before he had broken them in a rather less than comfortable fashion, then slapped the stabilization field splint on him before he could jerk his leg at all in pain.
Ewan grimaced, but didn't flinch once. "Och, that barely een tickled me. Ye do bonnie work laddie, that ye do." He smiled through the pain and tried to move the leg a little.
Guinparra actually chuckled a little after he said that. before dropping back into serious corpsman mode.
"Don't try and move it, there's a containment field around it designed to prevent that, and not even celt stubbornness can overcome it. Now let's get you moved."
Guinparra looked at Kara and Trent then waved them over and help the patient to his feet or carry him, depending on which would be more economical for everybody.
When the medic had done as much as could be done at the moment, Kara and Trent carefully carried the man back out of the cave. Kara called to Karma "We found one survivor. The cave ends in a pool of water. There's nothing else inside."
Karma turned and walked over to them. "What happened?" he asked the man they'd carried from the cave.
"There's a pool at the bottom of the passageway," Kara answered. "We found him laying beside it. His leg's broken, he might have a concussion. More than that, I can't tell you."
"Find somewhere safe to put him and get someone to stay with him until we can get another shuttle down here," Karma replied. "We need to keep going with the mission and try to figure what's going on around here."
Kara nodded. She signaled to the Corpsman to stay with the man. "I'll stay, too. I'm a telepath. It might come in handy. Kushner, stick with the Lieutenant."
Trent nodded and looked to the man. "I've got your back."
Lizzie had finished her analysis of the small plants and the soil in the cave. "What would you like me to do?" she asked Karma.
"Have you completed your study of the plants?" Karma asked her. "We're going to keep moving in a few minutes to try to find the crash site. You can come with us or stay here and study the plants more."
"I could study these plants for months," Lizzie admitted. "But I've got samples of the plant and the soil, plus the scans, so I can move on."
Karma nodded and turned to the others, saying, "Let's keep going. I want to try to get to the crash site before the weather turns bad again."
