Mission: Broken Mirror
Location: CO's Ready Room

On:

Standing on the turbolift headed for the bridge, Cam was going to report in to the ships CO, Commodore Samantha York. He was looking forward to getting back into the rhythm of everyday service life, and this was the first step. It seems that he was just not cut out for civilian life, at least, not without a certain someone in his life. Feeling the lift begin to slow, Cam brushed down his uniform, waited for the doors to open and made his way down to the CO's Ready Room.

Sam was sitting at her desk, going over a PADD. There had been far too many of them lately and she was hoping for a break soon. That, or it was time for shore leave. Maybe after they finished the current assignment from Starfleet. Her crew had been far too busy as well.

When she heard her door chime, she stood and walked around her desk to greet the new arrival. "Come." The door obediently opened.

Stepping inside, Cam walked over to stand on the opposite side of the deck from Sam and stood at attention, "Commodore, Captain Cameron Bourne reporting for duty"

"Welcome back, captain." Sam smiled and indicated the chair opposite her desk. "Please, have a seat. Can I get you anything from the replicator?" She remembered him partially because of her husband, who was a Marine Colonel currently assigned to his own ship, and partially because Cam was a good Marine.

"Thank you Commodore, It's good to be back" Cam said, taking the offered seat, "and if I could impose on you for a whisky?"

"As long as you don't mind that it's replicated." She went over and got him a whisky and herself a glass of apricot juice. She put his in front of him, then went around the desk to her more comfortable chair. It was mainly because she spent half her time in it, but it was a nice luxury. She put the PADD she'd been reading to the side and took a sip of her juice before addressing him. "I was pleased to see your name come up. But I thought you'd retired from the corps?"

Taking the whisky from Sam, Cam gave a sigh before responding, "I did, though I guess I'm just not cut out for the civilian life. I've tried it twice now and I always seem to find my way back to the Corps. Don't worry, I'm here for the long haul this time."

"That's my husband. He was the Marine CO here, then he was called away, then he came back. Now he commands a Marine ship that spends most of its time at a space dock, which lets him come here as a mission advisor until he's needed again. I don't think he could ever leave the Corps." She paused, considering him for a moment. "You're a good Marine, and I'm pleased to have you back, but will you be okay as the XO?"

"I have no problem executing any position that I'm put into. I admit, I was surprised to get my commission back, but I suppose I'm a valuable officer." Cam answered with a smile, "I will do everything I can to support the MCO"

"You are a valuable officer, and you're needed here. I have no doubt you'll readjust quickly." Sam smiled. "What did you do as a civilian?"

Taking a sip from his glass, Cam paused for a moment before answering, "Farming, strangely enough. I thought if I started a life of regular work, it would keep me satisfied and allow me time to rest. But that rest time just.......wasn't" he said, before downing the rest of the whisky and placing the glass onto the CO's table, "sorry, you don't want to hear my inner struggle. That's for the ship's counsellor"

"I don't mind listening, but I'm sure the counselor will be more helpful." Sam was not going to ask him to tell her anything he didn't want to. His record spoke enough. "It seems we usually end up where we need to be. I never planned to be in command of a starship, but here I am." She took another sip of her drink. "We've had a few minor upgrades, but the ship is mostly as it was. But, as it's been a little time, is there anything you'd like to know? Any questions you have?"

After a moment of thought, Cam shook his head, "no that's alright, I'm sure I'll pick up on anything I've missed out, thank you Commodore" he said, standing up from his chair, "well, I think I should go get acquainted with the Marines. If you'll excuse me"

"Of course, captain." Sam stood as well. "Welcome back to the Calypso. I look forward to having you back with the Marines. If you need anything, feel free to ask Captain Rye or Lieutenant Melo."

After he left, she sat back at her desk. She was aware that he and Kara had divorced and hoped it wouldn't cause any problems. But she also knew they were both professional enough to not let it interfere with their work if there were.

It also made her think of Damon. She hadn't talked to him in several weeks. Last she heard, the war wasn't going well. She wouldn't get anything from official channels, but perhaps if she contacted a friend... She turned to her computer and made a call.
