A few weeks has already passed, then a full month has gone by. Now, it iis currently two months at present for her. I’m still a rookie on this ship, Crewman Doltsy thought.

The word rookie may be an old term. It is define as a new recruit. I am still new and I’m green. That is an expression, in a short amount of time of being part of a crewmember of Calypso. My new career. My internship for the moment towards being a nurse. Long education before getting there. But, does everybody use the word rookie? Juranne wondered as she question herself just as she opened her eyes while laying on her bunker in the crewman’s quarters. Within two months, it has given her plenty of time to get used to her new schedule. The work credits accumulate towards her education.

In life, there are the cons and pros: More play and less work. Who does and who doesn’t? Juranne has more time on her hands, maybe too much, with only getting thirty hours a week, which is a shift of six hours plus three days off. Meanwhile, today is her off work day.

Since there is no rush to be somewhere at the moment, she took her time to rise out of bed to stretch her back and pop her knuckles. A yawn or two escaped her mouth. Coffee and a book, she grinned. Juranne replaced her sleeping clothes to a blue t-shift with the Calypso emblem on her left chest and a pair of denim for pants and regular shoes.

After finishing her coffee, she picked up her ipad to study one of her five courses that she was enrolled in. Microbiology, which is the study of germs is her first reading. Then, she takes a test after completing each chapters to earn her grades. Besides Microbiology, the other courses are Nursing Techniques, Xenobiology, Medical Instrumentation, and Advanced Chemistry. She spends at least fifteen to thirty minutes on each courses, which takes up two hours of her time, every two days that she isn't working.

Juranne loves to study and read a lot. After getting her studies finished for the day, she picked up an old book to read a medical thriller that was written in the 22nd century. “Dangerous Disease.” It is a fiction, written by a German writer and was translated in other languages, including Polish. The book is wrapped in a protective covering to keep the pages from falling apart. It was sold in an antique store in the largest city of Poland, downtown Warsaw. There were not many antique stores in the country or in the neighboring countries. She wanted something old in her hands and to feel what it is like to have an actual book. She reads in Polish as it is her mother tongue and English as second language. Her birthplace is Warsaw, the capital of Poland. Plus, she was raised there.

Reading out loud in English, “Both nurses were in there now, standing around the patient. Lisa was just removing a syringe from the patient’s IV line. Margaret pressed closer to the glass feeling her heart is beating faster.. She could make out the patient’s left hand. It now hung limp and lifeless…her first impulse had been to call a deputy as she believed that it was her boyfriend lying on that table. No wonder he has been missing for a week.” She closed the book as she felt the chills of the story and needed to pause. Her mouth has gotten dry and she got up to order a drink from the replicator.

After finishing her drink, she decided to take a break from reading such a genre of a fiction-thriller. Juranne was debating about going back to reading more to see what happens to the character, but she was afraid to know. Hard to imagine the past centuries of using medical IVs and needles that poke through the skin. The thought of it gave her goose bumps.

She left her quarters to head to the turbolift and asked for the lounge to the computer. The lift took less than a minute to reach the destination. As soon as the doors opened, Juranne started walking. She passed a few crewmembers and entered the lounge, the room of food and drinks. It is time to relax.
