Mission: Eye of the Storm
Location: Conference Room

[PREVIOUSLY[

"Once we block their communications, they will know and will most likely prepare to either attack or hide," Jayna added. "They do not have the capacity to evacuate everyone. And we do not want anyone on the outside to become suspicious before we are ready."

'How long can we hold them in the transporter pattern buffer?' Aenar asked speculatively, 'would we be able to do a beamout of each Reman lifesign and hold on to them until we can get it to a secure facility?'

"There are too many. We can get 20 at a time, with the transporter room and the cargo bay." It was a good idea, if there were only a few. Then his suggestion gave Sam an idea. "But if we can target the leaders, we might be able to get all of them at once."

"But how would we know who the leaders are?" Bela asked curiously.

'Remans are a hierarchical society,' Aenar offered, 'their very survival in the Romulan dilithium mines depended on order and obedience, and that's bled over into what was left of their original culture. There's little evidence that their leaders lead from the front either - I would suggest that those in the most protected areas are most likely to be their leaders.'

"Communications also help us find where those safe places are," Jayna added. "At least until they figure out what we're doing. That is unlikely to happen until we contact them directly."

"If they're in the safest places, one would have to assume that they're in places where they are teleporter proof, right? So, wouldn't that leave us back at an assault?" Bela worried.

"Not necessarily," Sam said. "They're more likely to be the first to run or go to ground. Or they may be transported off planet. Besides, if we take out their power supply, they may not be able to transport anywhere."

'They rely on stealth and misdirection - guerilla tactics honed in their struggle against the Romulans, essentially. Their use as shock troopers during the Dominion War was an atypical deployment of their soldiers,' Aenar noted. 'If we look at the conditions of the planet when we arrived, it was mostly perfect for operating under the radar which would have suited them.'

Jayna and Kara nodded in agreement.

"Intel is still going through data with Commander Munich," Jayna said, "But everything still indicates the Remen expected little to no resistance from the colonists. That should work in our favor."

It was Sam's turn to nod. "Thank you."

The doctor had nothing to give to the group about the species as he isn’t familiar with that kind of race. He remained quiet to listen. But he noticed the new crew member that he hasn’t met yet as she has spoken a couple of times in this meeting. Dwight assumed that he will be having a conversation afterwards with her. He focused his attention back to the discussion.

"So we're killing the Remen then?" Damion blurted out before looking around the room. "I thought we were peacemakers. Isn't that why we have stun settings on our weapons?" He took another sip of his coffee before putting it down on the table. After leaning back and swallowing it, he leaned forward again and looked around the table. "There has got to be a better way. I agree we have to think of the colonists, and if we are forced to fight back, we should, but automatically starting at the point isn't why we are Starfleet Officers. Is there something we can offer the Remen's to leave voluntarily?"

"We're going to ask them to leave first," Sam said. "I have no intention of killing anyone if we can help it. Having two starships overhead should be deterrent enough. At least I hope so. Fighting back is our last resort. However, I do not want to be unprepared if--and only if--we have no other choice."

"I believe that, despite the counselor's concerns, we should be ready to approach the Remen in the morning. That will give everyone a little more time to get ready," Sam said, looking around at her crew. "Are there any further questions?"

Shaking his head, Aenar gathered his PADD and waited to be dismissed.

Bela said nothing. She was thoroughly concerned about the plan and about the possibility of war. However, she would do what she could to support the crew and morale, despite her private misgivings.

After several moments, Sam nodded. "Thank you for your comments. Meet on the bridge at 0800 to approach the Remen. You're dismissed."

Getting to his feet, and collecting his PADD Aenar nodded his understanding. As he passed the Counselor he smiled in her direction and said, 'good call on the Remen Bela.'

Bela lightly touched Aenar on his arm as he passed. She had her misgivings but she was not going to undermine morale. Smiling warmly at Aenar, she simply nodded and decided that after this was over, perhaps she would get to know him a bit better.

Smiling in return, Aenar masked the foreboding he felt at the course of action he had advocated for. Every decision carried some risk. This carried more than other. Still, the Counsellor's brush against his arm comforted him somewhat.
