Mission:
Pulling Together
Location: Vulcan
Timeline: Right after "If Not the Romulans..."
ON
Samantha took a circuitous route to the building Illise said was the origin of the signal. She didn't want whomever was inside to see her coming. At the same time, she didn't want to be too slow about it in case whoever was behind the explosion left. For that reason she asked Remy and the Horus to keep an eye on the area and for Illise to continue monitoring for any other signals that might be sent.
Sam, Gink, and two security officers came to the back door of the building and carefully slipped inside.
"I don't like this." Tallas whispered softly. "Are you sure we should be doing this? Damion should be here. I mean, the Captain, shouldn't even be here. She should be on the bridge, safe and sound."
Kela looked over to Tallas and rolled her eyes. "Calm down, Blue. The Chief is still on his maternity leave with his wife and doesn't want to be bothered. And two, the Captain wasn't going to sit on the bridge and do nothing. So its our job to make sure nothing happens to her. Got it? I thought your people was supposed to be tough?"
"I don't go out in the field all that much. Damion usually keeps me up to do my technical stuff." Tallas said whispered back, still a bit worried.
"You need the field time and you're still the Acting Chief till Damion gets back so you need to be here. Now straighten up. You can't hide behind a console for your entire life." Kela said in a soft tone.
Sam turned to the others and caught their eye, then nodded. "Let's hope we find someone at home."
She turned to Gink. "Do you want to lead?"
"Not for Gold Latinum. Do I look like a burly Hue-Mon?" HE seemed almost insulted. "I would suggest the Security men precede us as they are best trained to deal with anything?" Gink was near the Commodore; he knew that it was a safe place as Federation procedures are meant to protect flag officers.
Johnson took the sigh and drew his Phaser; he knew Gink well enough to know that the man could use a phaser. "Come along Tech, you warn me of anything 'In' the room. You can use those toys and scan ahead." He took Gink by the lapel and pulled him inside.
The two moved forward; Johnson was taking shorter strides so to let Gink keep pace. Only the sound of the probe whirling about seemed to make any noise.
"Can you shut that thing up?" Jonson quietly ordered.
"You want sensors?" Gink replied.
This wqas a bad idea the moment his partner was killed. The two were all the Security that was left so Johnson moved towards the door. Only to have his left arm grabbed by Gink to halt the human.
One point three meters inside door, single blip."
Johnson nodded and with all the training he had he knew what to do. "Get on the ground at the door." Johnson gave whiapered orders. "I kick it in you fire."
"You are kidding?" Gink protested, the shake of the human's head confirmed the insanity of humans."You are not..." Gink knew this drill.
Getting on the ground prone; putting the Tricorder in front of him to check the screen placement he pointed his Cricket phaser he had pumped up to maximum stun.
After the Nod from Gink Johnson kicked open the door.
What insued was a rd beam of light that would have cut a human in half streaking over Gink's head, he let out a wail as he pushed the trigger of his phaser at the target's approximate position, humanoid at one poine nine meters tall he angled his shot for the chest.
The backlash of the Phaser shot was followed an instant later by shattering glass as something hit the window.
Johnson rushed the room and found the figure half in and out of the window.
"Did you remember to put your phaser on stun?" Sam asked, stepping into the room with the other security detail. "See if he's alive and get him medical treatment if he is."
Maximum stun setting and a two second burst." Gink said clambering up from his prone position. "I did get above average scores in marksmanship." HE said and looked at the wall behind him. "Of course targets don't shoot back."
Johnson was checking the man lying through the window.
"Emergency Medical Beam out." Johnson could be heard ordering; the blue shimmering engulfed and the man vanished. "Human Maleabout thirty years Earth Standard, I would guess," he reported.
"Not the best of shots thankfully." Gink added.
Sam wasn't going to comment on the shot. "Okay, let's see what we can find." She turned to the two security officers to let them go first.
Sam followed. She went to the computer, noting it was the standard console each room held. "Can you see if he used it?" she said to Shirol.
While security worked on the console, Sam continued to search the room with her tricorder, careful not to touch anything until she was sure it was clean.
Gink was scanning the area closer to the doorway. The minuscule evidence is always missed if one is not careful. He was checking for evidence of a second person. What he found was something interesting. At the base of the door was a trip wire to a shaped charge. It was set up but not primed.
"Commodore." Gink brought up. "I have a trap here, set up to go off, they knew we would find this and set a charge to ... deter any discovery but because the Terrorist was in the room he did not set the trip wire or my associate and I who stormed the door would not be here ma'am."
Sam nodded to the two security officers. "Check it out."
She turned back to Gink. "Well, that's one thing in our favor. Maybe he didn't have time to booby trap anything else, either." She, too, began to search the room for hidden compartments. She found a PADD and several small devices in a briefcase. "I'll send these to the Calypso for examination." When they had dematerialized, she continued searching.
"Commodore York, Munich here, ve have triangulated a second transmission other dan the detonation signals to your location."
"York here. Where is it coming from?" Sam asked.
Sam's PADD beeped an incoming message.
"There, ma'am," Ensign Delgado said.
Sam looked at the coordinates and nodded. "Thank you. When you're done, get back to the ship. York out."
Sam checked out the coordinates. "Would you like to have a look at this?" she said to the others in the room.
"If the calculations are correct." Gink began. "Then the signal was pointed in the direction of 247 mark 216 in a straight line, though with a tricorder I cannot tell if the signal bounced." He continued. "Your ship seems to be in a better position to get an accurate reading of any ships that might still be in the general areas." HE was moving to take scans of the Communications array. "This is a limited range unit, not really more than an emergency transciever in all practical terms but enough to get a message to who instigated these events."
"Then our next step is to go back to the Calypso," York said.
Gink wanted a better scan of the Claymore style mine; using the tricorder probe he took a slow radius scan of it. The breakdown was something odd. He went over it again and made a tree demensional representation of it. The circuit boards were precise enough to explain the design, it was of Romulan design. Where he came into some trouble is the Local raw materials and replications scans. It was replicated and built on Vulcan.
"Commodore..." He said without thinking. "We have contradictory aspects of this device.
"What contradictory aspects?" she asked.
"If this had gone off, in between my body parts you would have found Romulan circuit board and style chemical explosive residue." Gink looked up atthe Flag Officer. "Now that I can scan it clearly and intricately I find it was constructed of local materials, also the load in this is slightly off. Romulans tend to be efficent , enough to cover their purpose. This unit is large enough to do the job three times over." Gink nod. "In my experiences with reconstructions of Crime Scenes involving Romulans, they import in their equipment; do a job and get out with little trace of their operations. Logical violence is more their style. This device like the whole scene is to make a statement and hint elsewhere in my opinion. Easier to blame Romulans for all this than a more local source for construction."
Sam nodded. "So, we need to find out who is making a statement and what it is...besides anti-unification."
"It is; in my opinion, a Local job and the over-dosing of the explosives is not A Romulan MO; Method Operendi, so it will not be a part of the reunification movement. Ambassador Spock was not a violent sort so this looks more like a set up job to blame Romulans. It is more of a smoke screen to hide true intentions.
Just then her combadge chirped.
"Commodore York, this is Lieutenant Hirasawa. I don't have much time to explain sir, but the Calypso has jumped to high warp and we are heading for deep space. We are at red alert, and neither the bridge of Engineering have helm control. We'll be back for you as soon as we regain control of the ship Commodore."
"What?" Sam almost shouted. "Beam me aboard."Shut down power." If they attained warp, they wouldn't be able to beam her aboard.
"York to Horus, I need you to get me to the Calypso immediately."
There was no response.
Sam turned to the others. "We need to get to a ship. Come on."
