Mission: Pulling Together

ON

Sam was finalizing preparations for her own trip to Vulcan with Damon. Hans would be on bridge duty and renovations were under way. There was really nothing to keep her on the ship for a day or two. Two days and one night exploring or simply enjoying a vacation with Damon would be absolutely perfect.

Just then her comm chirped. She saved the schedule to show Damon and tapped the key to answer. "York here."

It was the Federation Ambassador to Vulcan. "Commodore. I regret to inform you that there has been an explosion on the planet. We believe it caused by anti-unification dissidents. One of your crew has been injured."

Sam had grown more and more tense as he spoke. "Who?"

"A Lieutenant T'Pral. Please recall your crew until we determine who is responsible."

"Thank you for your concern, but my crew and I are here for repairs. Why is it necessary to recall the crew? Are all visitors being asked to leave Vulcan?"

"I am not in a position to answer. And no, not all visitors are being asked to leave, but we do not want to cause any further incidents by having Starfleet personnel her eon leave."

"You, Starfleet, or the Vulcan government?" Sam asked.

"Me. As Federation Ambassador," he said firmly.

"Is there anything we can we do to help?" Sam hadn't heard of any unrest on Vulcan in at least the past year.

"Your assistance is not required," the ambassador said.

Sam suppressed a smile. She expected no less from him. He'd admitted that he was acting on his own. Her offer of help was merely a courtesy. "Very well then. Thank you for the information, ambassador. I will take up no more of your time."

"Peace and long life," he said, ending the connection.

Sam immediately contacted a friend of hers. "T'ala, I just heard about the accident. The Calypso is at your disposal. How can we help?"

T'ala gave her friend a half bow. "We have launched an official investigation. If you and your people wish to launch an unofficial one, it would be appreciated." The implication being that the Vulcan suspected there was more to this explosion than a simple protest.

"I'll do what I can," Sam said. "One of my people was injured. The crew will be eager to help out."

T'ala bowed. "Thank you, Samantha. I must go. Please let me know of your progress." The connection ended.

For several moments, Sam sat quietly, considering the implications. Then a file came through from Vulcan. She carefully looked it over, then tapped her combadge.

"York to Alves."

"Doctor Alves here.", the CMO's voice answered, with the sounds of a busy air tram station in the background.

"Doctor, there was an accident on Vulcan and Lieutenant T'Pral has been injured. I'd like you to check on her and see if there's anything we can do. I trust the doctors, but as one of the crew..."

"I understand.", Alexandra replied, "I report to duty immediately." She looked at her daughter standing by her side, her face telling her they won't be visiting the botanical gardens as planned.

"Thank you. Keep me informed. York out."

When she was done talking to the doctor, Sam called the CIO. "York to Batiste."

Remy sat on the floor of his wrecked quarters, at his feet lay two empty bottles. In his hand was one that was just about half way done. His eyes shot opened as he heard the call from his combadge. Slowly, he lifted his hand up to the shelf by the cough and removed his combadge from it, squeezing the insignia as he brought it closer to his mouth. "Batiste Here."

"I need your help," Sam said. "There was an explosion on Vulcan and Lieutenant T'Pral was injured. We need to find out what happened and why."

"On Vulcan?! No." Remy replied in a sarcastic tone. "Its a paradise. All that.... sand." He shrugged his shoulders before standing up on his feet. "Whats her condition? Is it a good injury or a bad injury."

"From what little I've been able to find, someone blew up a statue of Spock and she was too close to it." She paused for a moment and added, "Should I go to Logan and Jayna?"

"I'm going to assume you mean the Ambassador and not my Capuchin." Remy replied with a sigh as he placed the bottle on the side table and cleared his throat. "No, no. This something that should be done by a professional. Please have them meet me at Horus, powered up and ready to go. Please make sure they know we are coming. I wouldn't want to get into a logic war with some pointy eared hobgoblin who wants to argue about jurisdiction."

"This investigation is unofficial. My friend on Vulcan thinks there may be something more than a simple anti-unification protest behind this."

"Unofficial?" Remy paused in place, raising a brow. "Unofficial means it can get a lot of people in trouble, Captain. Are you sure you want to proceed like this?"

"One of my people was injured. While it was not a targeted attack, I want to know why."

Remy pulled the combadge away for a moment and whispered "Curiouser and Curiouser." The situation was truly interesting. He brought the combadge back up before saying. "Alright, but I want something in return. Something to be revealed later. Agreed?"

"No." She wasn't going to give him a blanket yes. "Either tell me now, or I'll agree to listen to what you suggest and seriously consider it, but you of all people should understand why a yes is impossible."

"I have lost enough from this ship, Captain. My career will not be next. I promise you my request will be reasonable and doesn't involve me, but I will be using Intel technology on an unofficial case to help satisfy the curiosity of your friend on Vulcan. You are already doing this to help someone else. All I am asking is you see it from my perspective. My career is all I have left now." Remy paused for a moment, clearing his throat a bit before continuing. "I am sure you could always get help from Mister Wolfe, but I am sure you are not going to pull him away from his newborn. You know what I have to work with and that I will not stop till its over. My team can do this, but if you remember, one of my team members isn't Starfleet and doesn't have the same protection from the Federation as we do. I am looking out for him, not myself."
