Mission: Of Gods and Men

[CONTINUED]

[OLD]

The second man pulled out a small chip and handed it to Kara. "This will identify you as one of us. If you decide to become part of the group, show it to the innkeeper. He'll know what to to. In the meantime, go back to your group. Pretend like you never saw us. It'll do neither of us any good if you aren't willing to commit."

[NEW]

Just then there was a knock at the door. The third man went over and held a whispered conversation with whoever was on the other side. They both spoke quickly and quietly. Then the door closed again. The man turned to the others. "False alarm. They weren't looking for us, but for someone associated with their prisoners." he looked at Cam and Kara. "That wouldn't be you, would it?"

Kara shrugged. "I don't know."

"Never mind," he said. "Stay here for a bit. It won't do for us to leave together." He turned and walked out, followed by the other two.

When they were gone, Kara leaned against Cam and sighed.

Releasing his grip on his knife, Cam released his held breath, "that doesn't sound good. Could that mean they've broken one of our people?"

"I don't know. I hope not." She hugged Cam. "We should go back to the inn and see what we can find out."

"I'm not so sure. If they have broken one of the crew, than the inn is no longer safe. If they haven't, than all the better but staying mobile might just be our best bet" Cam said, starting to get really suspicious of everything.

[Temple Reception Area]

Fifteen minutes after Teenah and Illise left their room, an Acolyte passed by and noticed the guards were missing. He immediately went inside, found the guards, and sounded the alarm.

Frenatus stormed into Samantha's room. "You lied!"

"I what?" Sam asked, standing to face the lizard.

"Your minions attacked my guards. When I find them, they will be punished."

"First, you imprisoned them without cause and second, I have no idea what you're talking about."

But she did, and he caught a glimmer of that in her mind. "You knew! You came here to stall so that your people could destroy what I've built!"

She took a step towards him, angry now. "No. I spoke the truth. You are the one in the wrong and you know it. We came here in peace, simply to gain information. You are the one who does not trust outsiders, and yet you yourself are an outsider."

"I AM THEIR GOD!" Frenatus bellowed, coming towards her, his thoughts focused on forcing a confession out of her.

[Outside the Temple]

While Jenkins was off looking for squirrels and Colonel Raine was off reconnoitering, Arnon stood leaning against the archway of the gate waiting for Commodore York to return. Suddenly there was a commotion. The gate flew open and a group acolytes came running out with shouts of 'death to the outsiders!'

"Ow," said Arnon from behind the door after Frenatus' angry followers past. He pushed the door away from him and rubbed his nose. "Now that was simply bad manners."

Just then Arnon noticed that two of the acolytes had stopped, turned, and were now looking directly at him.

"Hello," he said, pleasantly.

"Death to the outsiders!" they shouted menacingly.

"Oh, bother," said Arnon. "Catch!"

Arnon threw his baguette at the face of one of the acolytes. It struck him on the nose, startling him.

"Have at thee, vile villains!" he shouted drawing both his sword and dagger.

The two acolytes charged forward, swords drawn. Arnon deftly parried both swords, stepping nimbly out of the way.

"Are you sure we couldn't discuss this?" he asked. "I know a lovely little inn that serves quite palatable food and drink..."

"Death to the outsiders!" The acolytes shouted.

Arnon sighed as he struggled to hold off both of his attackers.

"Nothing is ever easy," he said.

Arnon didn't really want to hurt them but without a phaser his options were limited.

"Gentlemen," he said. "You really need to find a healthier way to express your negative feelings."

"Death to the out..."

"Yes, yes, 'death to the outsiders!' I know," Arnon said. He side-stepped one of his attackers and cracked him on the back of the head with the pommel of his sword. The man dropped like a felled tree, unconscious. Stepping towards the other acolyte, Arnon threw his dagger, stabbing the man in the foot. While the acolyte was distracted, Arnon delivered a Vulcan Nerve Pinch. This acolyte also fell to the ground unconscious. Arnon retrieved his dagger and wiped it off on his opponent's tunic. He tapped his commbadge.

"Barak to York," he said. "What is your status?"

A few moments later, Jenkins came barrelling back towards the temple holding a small furry creature by it's tail in his outstretched arm. "Hey Arnon! Look I found a...."

An Acolyte stopped in his tracks looking to the young marine. "Death to the outsiders!!!" he wailed as he charged towards Jenkins.

"Arnon what did you do?" Donald exclaimed as he whirled the small animal by it's tail hurling it towards the Acolyte.

The animal struck the man in the face sending him tumbling to the ground. His fall was followed shortly after by several screams as he clutched at his face. The small furry animal appeared to be trying to eat the acolytes face. He squirmed around clawing frantically as he tried to remove the creature from his face.

"What the hell?!" Jenkins exclaimed. "And I carried that thing for two kilometres?"

Arnon looked over at the acolyte being attacked by the feral, apparently carnivorous, rodent. Then he looked at Jenkins.

"Apparently," he said. "You are a squirrel whisperer."

Arnon walked over to the acolyte, grabbed the squirrel by the tail, and whipped it around, smashing it on the ground. There was a sickening crunch and then the squirrel lay still. The acolyte was still screaming. Arnon removed a hypo from his bag of holding, loaded it with a sedative, and injected the acolyte. The acolyte calmed and then fell asleep.
