"I was asked to keep a secret and watch over someone. The request came from a close friend, someone who has saved my life and taught me how to be a better field agent." Damion paused for a moment as he leaned forward in his seat and looked at Arnon. "Now, both are inches from each other. Instinctively, I want to bring them together. However, one doesn't know the other exists and the other doesn't want to see her. Her own mother wants to keep a distance from her daughter because she is under the impression she is a bad influence. I respect the mother enough to keep to her wishes, but I know how much the daughter has been longing to know about her past. A past that has been hidden from her. A past I helped conceal."
"How old is the daughter?" Arnon asked.
"Old enough." Damion replied. "She's a good officer. As tech savvy as anyone, but she doesn't have any field training. The kind of training her mother, uncle, and I have had. I kind of want her to know about her lineage. Her mother and uncle in particular."
"That's a difficult choice to make," Arnon replied. "The daughter has a right to seek out her birth mother. Her birth mother, as sad as this might sound, has a right to her privacy. I take it that the mother put the child up for adoption?"
Damion shook his head. "No legally. You see, the Captain of the ship we served on promised to keep the daughter safe, but midway through the tour, she began to get the feeling that the Captain would use the daughter to his advantage. So, the mother, sent a message through private channels to have her sister in law take the daughter away. Get her off every ones radar. During the course of this, the daughter was led to believe that her mother abandoned her or was dead. Only recently, with conversations with her, I noticed she has been talking more and more about wanting to know her past."
Arnon nodded.
"How do you think she'll react to you telling her you know not only who, but where her mother is," he said. "How long have you know about this, by the way? And who is the daughter to you?"
"Depends on what side we're talking about." Damion answered quickly. "I know the mother will be angry, primarily at me. Part of me also thinks she will be scared at confronting her daughter. The daughter will be all confused. Probably angry at me too. Little bit toward her mother, but mainly me for not saying anything." He laughed slightly and shook his head. "I can deal with people being angry at me. That I can take. It's the aftermath that concerns me. Breaking a promise to a close personal friend."
Damion paused for a moment before he continued, leaning back against the cushion of the couch. "Her daughter has been my assistant for quite some time. I pulled strings to get her on board. She's like family, in a way. It's complicated. I consider her mother and uncle family, so she is too, but she doesn't understand. To her I'm probably just an senior officer who has taken a liking to her and depends on her for her skills."
"It seems, then, in the end," Arnon said. "That you have to decide which is more important to you; this young woman knowing her mother or your promise to a close personal friend. Unfortunately, only you know the answer to that dilemma. So, how can I help you find that answer."
"By doing the reveal instead of me." Damion said quickly, straight faced. He looked at Arnon for a few moments with a serious look before smiling quickly afterwards. "I'm joking, but you can understand that there is no easy way to do this."
"Oh I agree with you," Arnon said. "I suppose you have to weigh the benefits of the reveal, versus the benefits of keeping silent, and of course the negative impacts of each course. We can do that in here if you want to."
Damion placed his hands together as he leaned forward in his chair and looked over to Arnon with a stern look on his face. "You wouldn't have the time." He said softly for a brief moment before leaning back in his chair again.
"You'd be surprised, Lieutenant," Arnon responded. "I'm here now in any case. Why don't we see what we can accomplish?"
The two men talked awhile longer, finishing out the session. Arnon asked Damion to be sure to make an appointment for the next week with Chief Ileos before leaving. After Damion left the office, Arnon replicated a cup of tea for himself, sat back down at his desk, leaned back and put his feet up.
"Begin dictation," he said aloud. "Lieutenant Damion Wolfe, Chief of Security, USS Calypso, session 1. Lieutenant Damion Wolfe is...a complicated man...."
