Mission: Of Gods and Men
hey, thought we could write a jp together! ^_^
I'll get it started later today :D But if you want to begin writing sooner, that works for me too. :) I'm sure you have loads of JPs going on right now! Welcome aboard. I'm pretty new here, too.
Allison: Sure, and thanks!
Drani looked over the scheduled appointments and saw that three had cancelled. "Nurse Jenkins, why were appointments for Anderson, O'Brien, and Flekker cancelled?"
The young blonde woman looked up from her PADD. "They claimed they had training. They're all Marines."
"I see...well, they have a week to get in here and make sure their commander knows so he can excuse them from training."
"Yes ma'am. By the way, you have an appointment in any moment. A Lieutenant Syed."
"Good.". She then went back to her office and brought up Lieutenant Syed's medical history.
A knock on the door came - Maryam was here, standing in the doorway cautiously. " Hello - you are Dr. Drani, yes? -- I'm here for an appointment. Maryam Syed. That's me, I mean." she blurted out, then smiled with embarassment at her own inability to speak like a normal human. " Well, that didn't come out right. But, um...yes."
Drani stood and smiled at the woman. "Nice to meet you, Maryam. I am Doctor Drani. Please have a seat at biobed 3," she gestured as she approached Syed.
Maryam made her way to the aforementioned bed and lightly jump-sat on it. " It's nice to meet you too!" she said cheerfully, wondering if she sounded too chipper. That was always the problem. When she was in a good mood, everyone else was in a rather casual one, and she had to consider what they would think of her random cheer. Of course, part of the problem with the good cheer this time was it was a replacement for the nerves she would be feeling otherwise...
Drani smiled widely as she sensed Maryam's thoughts. "You're welcome to be as chipper as you want," she said, grabbing a medical tricorder and flipping it open. "How have you been feeling lately?"
" Pretty good, actually." Maryam remarked, feeling happy that she could just be herself. " Some things have just clicked in place for me lately and things are looking up."
"That is great to hear," Drani commented as she tapped a few buttons to initiate a biological scan.
" Hmm, speaking of things clicking, I had a question for you. Have you ever done synthetics?" Maryam asked, deciding not to wait any longer. " Because..."
"Slow down. Why do you ask?" She looked up from the tricorder.
" Well, a friend and I going to be visiting Vulcan for our shore leave and for reasons it would be really wonderful if we could go there looking like the natives." Maryam smiled sheepishly. " It's a bit of a strange situation, I know."
Drani was curious. "Why do you want to look like Vulcans," she asked, tapping a few more buttons on her tricorder in the process.
" There's an - an event I want to attend that one of my friends on Vulcan invited me to," Maryam explained, " A sort of family reunion? But of course, I look nothing like family and her family is rather exclusive about who attends. She's hoping she can pass me off as a Vulcan friend, and I figured it would be a big adventure." She went on, a little bit nervous but she hoped it could be interpreted as embarrassment at revealing such a silly venture. Part of it was.
"One thing, Vulcans hate is liars, but yes, I can make you appear Vulcan. But if you are serious about this, you had best study their language and customs extensively."
" I know." Maryam looked away guiltily. " I certainly will. Cultures and language are already something I've always been interested in; its a good excuse to get to it and learn them. What about you?" she asked tentatively.
"I try to learn what I can about other cultures," Drani replied.
" That is good to know..." Maryam tailed off. " Thank you, by the way. For doing it. I know it's silly...and possibly offensive...I didn't think about that before...but what people don't know can't hurt them right?" she felt hot all over and mildly disgusted by herself in her shame. " Speaking of," she looked at Victoria uncertainly, " Can we keep this private, please? I mean, I am sure you would anyway," she added hurriedly, " But um..." Well, this visit was going down the toilet.
"Just relax, Maryam. Your secret is safe with me,Drani reassured her.
No words could cure Maryam of her sudden infection of nerves and awkwardness. " We should spend some time together, as friends." Maryam said sheepishly as she slid off the biobed and began to back away towards the exit, slowly. She bumped against some equipment and stumbled, laughing awkwardly as she quickly picked up the things that had fallen and put them back. " I am sure you can understand um, why, uh...it was a pleasure meeting you, uh, Doctor Victoria, and I'm not just saying that!..."
"Sure, we can spend time together," Drani said, not really sure why Maryam was acting so nervous all of a sudden.
"Allright bye, before I make more of a fool of myself!" she laughed weakly and waved as the sickbay door closed before her.
In the corridor, Maryam groaned at herself. The doctor had been perfectly nice but her own inconsideration had tripped her up. What could Dr. Drani be thinking about her now? Strange, awkward, and not above being a 'liar'...that word did not sit well with her who had always considered herself a bastion of truth. For some reason she hadn't thought about the horror of actually being caught in the act not by Marula's people, but complete strangers who would wonder who this strange, inconsiderate person was and why she was pretending. She was certain that Vulcans engaged in some sort of espionage, of course they did, but that did not mean what she was doing would be acceptable. But being a...spy...would mean breaking a few rules of consideration, and that was just how it was.
" I guess," she told herself, still wincing at her own folly, " We had really better not get caught, then..."
