Sam waited for everyone to get some food and get settled and then began.
[NEW]
"I thought you should know what's going on," Sam started. "As most of you know, the Panerians and Octurans signed the peace treaty. That part of our assignment is over. However, there have been ... complications. We are still tracking down the murderer of the first Panerian delegation. I'm not going to leave until we have this matter resolved. There is also the matter of a third-party arms dealer who has been feeding supplies to both governments and fueling the war between them. He surrendered to us, but we still have to clean up the pieces."
"I've got my men on twelve hour rotations, covering the two ships." Leroy said covering a yawn with taking a sip of his coffee. "And we haven't seen anything or anyone in that time."
"Good," Sam said. "I hope it stays that way. The man has been cooperative, but we still don't know who is behind all this. The man brought us a cryptic message, but has little real information except that he's been playing both sides. I'm considering a meeting between the two governments and our dealer so they, too, can be made aware of the situation and how he played both of their governments for his own profit."
"That's assuming the arms dealer even cares. The problem with arms dealers is some are in it because they pick sides in a war. Those who sell to both sides tend to care about one thing only, and that's money. Since he's been playing both sides, he won't want to show up for such a meeting. And you can bet that some people in both sides of the government knew, that's why they'd keep paying him, to get better weapons. Escalation." Chris explained. "And before you ask, I know quite a bit about arms dealers. I'm not just here for my engineering skills and pretty face."
"I didn't think you were," Sam told him. "Than you."
"I shouldn't think he is in a position to refuse to go to such a meeting," Arnon said. "And I believe that it might be beneficial, provided we can convince both sides that he actions were not Federation policy. If we cannot, such a meeting could backfire."
"Not to mention it's likely that there will be parties on both side that would want him kept quiet who might try for a more permanent solution." Ignatz said, "He's well and truly got his back to the wall, with 3 different factions out for his head."
"I agree with you both," Sam said. "He's now in our custody, so we have to ensure his safety. At the same time, we need to use this to our advantage to find out who is pulling his strings."
"Well if anyone comes for him, they're dust," Leroy said with a shrug. Frowning he seemed to be listening to an earbud. "But that point is moot, someone just arrived and is demanding that we allow the captain to go free."
"Arrived where?" Sam asked.
"At the long distance scouts I have, near the moon of another planet. They say the good captain is one of their employees, along with the carrier that was dispatched here not long ago." Leroy yawned again, before standing. "I'll go check it out, and report back."
"Send me the data," Sam said. "It looks like we're going to have another visitor. Is there anything else?"
"Yes ma'am. I'd like to request permission to get a team aboard from Utopia Planetia. I don't know about the engineers you have aboard, but the last chief made a minor mistake with the EPS grid, which burnt out one of the relays. Not their fault, given what you said, but the fact is, the engineers here didn't even notice it. I need people I can trust, ma'am, and quite frankly, there isn't one person down there who I'd trust to run the engine room in my absence." Chris said.
Leroy stopped before he left. "If you need some people, my engineers are all trained to multi task. I wouldn't trust anyone else at my back but those Marines working on my birds." Not waiting for a reply he left and started jogging down the hall. Hopefully if he met with this new person, he might be able to afford some sleep."
"Yui is also trained in engineering," Sam said. "We're not likely to get any help for weeks, so best use the resources available on board. Sorry, Lieutenant Hartley."
"At this point, I'll take what I can get." Chris replied. "I'll put in a request for my team as well, if you have no objections. The sooner they leave, the sooner they get here. You'll also be glad to know that I've started working on a new power reserve system, in case we have problems where our shields or other critical systems go down. It'll take a couple of weeks, but I should be able to have a new set up backup power relays." He added, making notes on his PADD.
"As long as you know them and trust, them, you have my approval," Sam told the engineer.
"I trust them with my life ma'am. My team have worked together on two ships now at Utopia, and we were working together before that. They'll do you proud, I promise you that." Chris said.
"All right. Get me the information and I'll put in the request," she said.
"Were you able to pull anything useful from the pirate's ship's logs?" Illise asked over a now-empty mug of coffee.
"No, but I have Intel taking a second look," Sam said. "If there's anything to find, they'll find it. Look into the history of both planets. Find everything you can that points to this arms dealers fueling the war and who he's working with. We'll need to present that information to the two governments. Use Lieutenant Jones if you need him. If we can show both sides what's been going on, they'll be more forthcoming with the mercenaries they still have on their respective planets. There will be no lasting peace until they're removed."
