“All alone tonight…?” Emily, the bartender at Jack’s Pub asked as she approached him.
“For the time being, yes.” He responded with a smile on his face. Emily was his favorite bartender at Jack’s. She was a fiery ginger. She always allowed her fiery side to come out but at the same time she was very friendly, very easy to converse with. Very kind. “Morgan should be here soon enough.” He added.
“Oh, ok.” She simply responded as she placed the clean glass on the bar. “The usual…?” She asked as she reached for the familiar bottle. Watching him node she smiled placing the empty glass in front of him then filling it up with the blue liquid that resided in the bottle.
“Thanks.” He grabbed the now half full glass and took a sip of it. It felt strong going down but it was a taste that he had grown accustomed too. He placed the glass back in front of him. “That’s a new one…” He said pointing to a new unit patch that was hanging on the wall behind the bar. The unit patch had an image of a rubber ducky. The type that kids would have in the tub with them. Behind the ducky it showed an outline of a Sovereign class starship. The lettering read “USS Galahad”.
Emily looked on the wall that was filled with various unit patches from starships, starbases and just different units within Starfleet. “Oh, the one with the rubber ducky in it.” She said looking back at him. “Yeah, I actually just put that one up. There was a couple in here earlier having a couple of drinks and as they were leaving they handed it to me.” She looked back at it once more with a smile. “I think its pretty creative. I like it.” She said as she turned to see that several other people had joined them at the bar. She headed to attend to them.
“Creative...yes.” He said to himself. He grabbed his glass and took another sip.
“You know, that stuff is still illegal.” A female voice said as she approached him. Morgan walked up to a stool next to his and took a seat looking over to him with a smile.
“Emily is the one that served it to me.” He replied to her comment. “Im sure she would be willing to hear any complaints that you might have...but I’d be careful.” He added as he took another sip.
“Oh?” Morgan leaned closer in. “And why is that…?” She asked with a curious tone in her voice.
He placed the glass back on the table then leaned in. “I cannot say. I have been sworn to secrecy…” He leaned back looking at her with a playful smile on his face.
She leaned back laughing at his comment. She shook her head gently. “Of course you have. That’s okay. I’m not afraid of Emily.” She stated leaning back
“Oh you aren’t?” He asked.
“That’s right. I’m not. Emily and I are like sisters. She wouldn’t do anything to me.” She grinned. “I thought you knew that.”
Before he could say anything else Emily approached them both. “Hey Morgan! It’s nice to see you. Will you be having the same thing as he is…?” She asked as she grabbed an empty glass.
“Hi Emily!” Morgan replied. “And sure, why not. I feel like living on the dangerous side tonight.”
Emily smiled filling up the glass. She brought it over to Morgan after it was filled up and placed it in front of her. “Dangerous if the only way to live.” She winked at Morgan then went to tend to other customers.
Morgan took a sip of the drink. She wasn’t use to the taste of it like he was but it was good. She did like it. She took another sip before placing the glass down. She looked over at him. “I’ve received my new assignment.”
He looked back at her asking. “Where are you going?”
“Starbase 80…” She replied bringing the glass up. “I will be the new Assistant Chief Operations Officer…” She added then took another sip of the drink.
“That should be a good experience.” He said.
“I guess so…” She said with a sigh.
“You don’t think so?”
She looked back to him shrugging her shoulders gently. “I suppose it will be. I’ve just already been in that role. I was hoping for something more, you know?”
“I understand but running the Operations department aboard a starship is very different from running Operations aboard a starbase. It might not seem like a promotion in title but it is in responsibility. I think it’s a good move in your career.” He took a sip of his drink.
She nodded. She understood what he was saying but she was still slightly disappointed and the way she figured she’d deal with it was by drinking. She took a larger sip of her drink. Soon enough the drink was gone. She placed the glass down then looked at him with a sip. She smiled at him before looking at Emily gently waving her glass.
“Oh, great! It will be one of those nights.” He said to himself as he took another sip.
“What was that…?” She asked looking at him.
He shook his head. It was best not to repeat. It would be a fun evening that was for sure.
