1,345 words; about a 7 minute read

Mission: Deadly Diplomacy
Location: Sick Bay

ON

Newmark was quite glad to be back in his normal uniform; the Commando clothes were not his style and going 'Native' always had a uneasy feeling for him; not unknown to him just uneasy, but that was over and he had managed to be back in the Sick Bay.

The setting appeared different as he had an office now; he should have liked it more; perhaps after he has gotten used to it he might accept it was his alone? Right now he had processed the few wounded that remained in the Sick Bay and was just getting ready for the daily reports that he must file in a timely manner.

Kara and Sergeant Sparks entered Sickbay, a not-so-coherent Beckinsale half-carried, half-stumbling between then.

"Is there a biobed free?" Kara asked.

Helga hurried out from a back room. "Oh, dear. What happened?" she asked. "Come right this way. There's an empty biobed in the back."

She led the way to a quiet room and stepped back for the Marines to enter. While they did so, she went in search of Doctor Newmark.

Newmark noticed entry into the Sick Bay and was just coming out of the Office when he saw Helga. "SO what is up Helga?" Newmark asked and glanced towards the two 'taking' the woman to a biobed. "Did she have some kind of shoreleave I am unaware of?" Newmark noted as he had seen this kind of thing in his past; a past where people blew off steam that was a pressure cooker ready to burst. "She does not look good." Newmark was removing his gloves as he head towards her with Helga right behind.

"They did not say, Doctor," Helga replied. "They just asked for an empty biobed."

Kara made sure Amarylis was lying comfortable and turned to face Lowe and Newmark. "We think she's taking drugs. We found a number of empty bottles of alcohol and some vials that could be cocaine in her quarters. Could you do a screening to see what is in her system and then run a detox?"

"Doctors I will grab her medical records for you." An attending nurse said walking off to a nearby console.

"She is not the worst I have seen from this kind of binge." Newmark reached for her slowly. "Let me have a sense of what we are dealing with here?"

Newmark took a look at her by holding her head and using his thumbs to open her very dilated pupils; the bio-energy in her pulse was nothing normal and she had little responses. The lethargic type rolling of the eyes , nothing focusing and the irregular heartbeat were all signs of something seriously induced. Looking in the empty eyes he could not see into her soul through the gateways, too much induced smaoke and mirrors .

"She had a party, that is for sure." He had to shake his hands to get rid of the hypersensitive snesations remaining from his touch. Get me some cordial stabilizer, I do not want to have her heart rate making her heart explode or anything." Newmark sighed, not unlike some of his past patients who were commandos blowing out some braincells to get past what they hda done and getting stupid drunk or worst. "SHe really wanted to feel nothing that is for sure." He noted and took the probe from the Tricorder. "Psyco altering drugs of at least two types, taken differently from the powder marks up her nasal passages, the residue on her throat. She mixed drugs with the alcohol and took hallucinogenics through her nasal pathways." He glanced over at the two people that brought her in. "Can you get me some of the samples so I might have an idea of the consistency and purity of the items?"

It was more of a task for the people to have something to do while Newmark does some of the more 'unpleasant' type fluid and sample taking of the young lady's system.

Kara watched for several minutes, but knew she needed to let hte doctors do their job. "I'll be back later," she said. Right now, she needed to talk to Cam and let him know what was going on.

She didn't have to go far as Cam was already on his way to sickbay. He'd heard through the 'grape vine' that Beckinsale was being taken to sickbay, but he didn't know why. Spotting Kara coming towards her, He called out, "Kara, what's going on?"

She smiled in relief when she saw him. Kara pulled him to the side of the corridor to explain quietly. "Beckinsale's quarters are littered with empty bottles of alcohol and containers of drugs, mostly cocaine. I just left her in sickbay. She's definitely on something. York relieved her of duty pending an investigation by you."

"Doctor. I have retrieved the necessary medical records you asked for. You might want to have a look at these." The nurse stated walking with Newark off into his office. She looked him in the eye as she handed him a PADD. "This isn't the first time she has abused. Although her life before Starfleet was not documented, she had an incident in her early years as a marine, roughly during her time in the Dominion War. Doctors found illicit substances in her system during a routine check up in one of the FOBs. This kind of stuff gets pushed under the rug in those kind of times, it's not the first time I've seen it. I think you need to talk this over with Commodore York and Captain Bourne. She needs treatment."

"That was a long time ago," Helga said. "Doctor, can you find out how long she's had the drugs in her system?"

"I'd like to know that answer as well" Cam said, as he walked into sickbay, "it will help with her court martial if you could also tell when she started taking the drugs again"

"You do realize you just brought her into my Sick Bay." Newmark said calmly as he put hsi gloves back on. "Now as far as the Toxicology report is that ..." He looked at the Gentleman. "Long term exposure to the alchohol and the Drugs are high right now and if she had not have a higher immunity to these drugs she would be dead by the amount of them in her system." He sighed. "I would say it is not a question of how long are the drugs in her system but the fact of when did she binge and flood her system with this much garbage?" Newmark said. "Trace elements date back six months, not to a high degree and outside that time I really cannot predect when she initially started the drug intake?" Newmark continued. "I am having a computer anlysis of her blood and other DNA to narrow the time span but from my initial readings and anlysis from past experiances I would say for her time on the Claypso she had has had trace elements in her system by the damage to surrounding organs and her biosignature as a whole. A minimal of six months of Drug use."

Kara, who had come back into sickbay with Cam, chimed in. "If her quarters are anything to go by, she's been doing this for a lot longer than six months. If you could send Captain Bourne a copy of the results of your findings, it'll help a lot."

The attending nurse simply smiled as she observed the conversation.

"I will forward the report from the Toxicology when it is available." Newmark informed as he looked to the others. "It will be about an hour for the results."

"One hour then, I may have some questions for you after I read the report" Cam said, looking over at Beckinsale before turning around and heading out of sickbay.
