Sins of the Father (part 1)

1,025 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: Deadly Diplomacy
Location: York's Ready Room
Timeline: After Message Received

ON

"Commodore York, you have a guest in your ready room. He says it's urgent." Came a voice over the comms.

Sam was spending some precious time with Damon. She'd been so busy lately that time to sit and talk was hard to come by. When the message came across her combadge she sighed. "No rest for the weary. I'll be back -- eventually." She gave him a quick kiss and headed out the door.

Several minutes later she walked into her ready room and stopped. Who she saw before her was not at all what she expected.

Standing before her was an aged man most likely in his late 50's to early 60's. He was adorned in a pair of black slacks, complimented by a white button up shirt and a dark grey overcoat. HIs hair was silver and his face weathered by winkles and a few small scars. His deep brown eyes immediately met Samantha's studying her without even having said a word.

"Samantha York....Jethro Gordon Vance. I'll skip the pleasantries and get straight to the point. Someone killed my daughter, why?" Jethro asked placing his hands in his jacket.

"First, I personally don't believe she's dead, but I seem to be alone in that belief," Sam said. "Second, from what I can tell, it has to do with a Cardassian female."

"You don't think I'd know if she wasn't dead? I didn't travel all the way out here to satisfy some game my daughter is playing. Believe it or not there are more important people in this world then Alexandra Vance. This Cardassian female? What do you know about her?." Jethro replied in an irritated tone as his skin began to talk on a red hue.

Sam leaned over her desk and stared back at the man. "Yes, I do believe that. Did you know she faked her death once before on my ship?" Granted, it was to give Wolfe a reason to run, but if he didn't know about it, she wasn't going to tell him. "And if you don't know about the Cardassian, you clearly don't know your daughter well enough for her to trust you."

Jethro smiled laughing softly. "Who do you think taught her how? Sure as heck wasn't the academy." He strolled over to the chair before York and took a seat. "As for the Cardassian. Alexandra has made a great few enemies in her career, many I can't tell you of. Alex may have been a legend in her own mind, but if there is one person she can't hide from, it's me."

Although his face did not convey it, the mention of a cardassian woman concerned Jethro. Did York know of her? Only a handful of people knew of that mission and one coincidentally served on board. Had Amarylis spoken?

"So, tell me what you know about the Cardassian," Sam said.

"I know a lot about many Cardassians. You're going to have to be more specific Commodore." Jethro replied leaning back in his chair.

"No, I don't," Sam replied, sitting back. "Because if you know, you are already aware of whom I am speaking. If you aren't, I'm not going to be the one to tell you, so our conversation on this subject is over. Is there anything else I can do for you?"

Jethro got up leaning on the desk towards York. "Like I told you Commodore. I know a lot of Cardassians all of which would be more then obliged to see Alexandra dead. Now let me make this clear. I'm not in the business of giving information, especially not to someone I just met...or someone my daughter didn't trust."

"I could say the same about you," Sam countered. "What I am told in confidence stays in confidence -- even to a father. Now, i can show you the evidence I have on Alexandra's death, but part from that, I have nothing more I can give you."

"Fair enough." Vance began. "I would have preferred to speak to Sergeant Beckinsale first but I felt it necessary to extend the courtesy first. I'll take what you have and be on my way."

"Very well," Sam said. She loaded the information that wasn't classified onto a PADD and handed it to Mr. Vance. "The computer can tell you where to find Amarylis."

Jethro took the PADD from York. "Thank you Commodore...." He began looking to the window behind her sighing. "I should've come here a long time ago. Perhaps I'd still have both my daughters instead of just one. With your permission I wish to remain here to see to the funeral arrangements and for Amarylis' protection. I'll be damned if I let some cardassian take my other girl."

Inside Jethro was an emotional tidal wave concerned now for Amarylis. Her CO had no awareness of the danger she was in and Jethro was sworn to secrecy. Amarylis would tell him who he could trust.

"You are welcome to see Amarylis here. But she is currently under our protection and will not be leaving the ship. Not with you and not with anyone else," Sam said firmly.

"Under protection? From what?" Jethro said slamming his fist down on the desk as his tone turned irate and his face red. "You need to tell me what the hell is going on so I can help you stop this. I want this threat gone as much as you do!"

"I'm afraid that information is classified, Mr. Vance."

Jethro laughed. "Do you think I'm some ignorant civilian? Commodore I've been doing this along time and I'd like to think I've earned better then it's classified. Alexandra wasn't the first Vance to join the branch and she won't be the last."

Jethro's tone had risen during the dialogue but he took a moment to calm himself down brushing his silver hair to the back. "If you knew the kind of people that wanted my girls dead....classified would be the least of worries. Mark my words, if they want my girls dead.....you'll be next."
