ON:
The room was dimly lit, silent, devoid of any activity upon first glance which would be customary if the room were unoccupied and apparent to the untrained eye and ear. However to a more seasoned pair of senses one would immediately identify the gentle sound of a child's whimper from the far bedroom. In this room a queen sized bed, made with sheets having no wrinkles showing exceptional care taken into it's upkeep was placed in the center of the room leaving only an aisle way the width of a small end table on the far wall leading to a double closet containing the occupant's adornments wrapping around to the door intersecting another aisle way leading to the lavatory. The door to the lavatory was locked and the only lit portion of the room. In this portion, two young officers held each other tightly as they crouched in the corner. The woman, with tears streaming down her eyes as she grasped her companion in fear looking for strength. The male, fighting back the tears as if to show a sign of strength even though he knew he was completely helpless against the adversary which stood cloaked in the dark side of the room. The hand just barely visible, but the knife blade glistening across their child's neck was made clearly evident by the assailant whom wielded it to warn the frightened parents against any actions which would then see to a quick end to their offspring's existence.
"What do you want?" the man asked in a shaky tone as he continued to grasp his wife.
The assailant scoffed. "Why do they always ask what I want like I'm some petty thief looking for a quick buck. Like their troubles can be bought away with latinum or a promise of a future favour. How pathetic. What I want is not yours to give." the feminine voice replied calmly.
"Then why are you here?" the woman shouted.
The assailant raised her hand placing her index finger perpendicular to her lips. "Shhhh child. I wouldn't want to think you're interrogating me now would I? I don't like when people pry. It's IMPOLITE."
"No..No I'm sorry. I'll be quiet." The woman replied still shivering placing her hand over her mouth to contain any further outbursts.
"Now isn't that a good girl." The assailant said with a smile.
"Why are you doing this?" The child cried out softly gripping his teddy bear tightly hoping to wake up from this nightmare, safe, secure in his own bed.
The assailant's eye were drawn down to the child's hands noting her grasp on the bear. "If you run, I'll slice you parent's up into sandwich meat." She said as she removed the knife from the girl's neck sliding her hands down from her shoulders to the child's hands. Using her index finger and thumb she gently took the finger's of the child right hand and individually pulled them back to release her grasp on the bear. She would then place the knife in the girl's right hand and clench her fingers around the hilt.
"Now, I want you to take this knife and I want you to run it along Mister Bear's neck until you cut all the way through okay?" The assailant said calmly to the girl with a hint of enjoyment in her voice.
"But I love Mister Bear, I don't want to hurt him." The girl replied as she began to cry.
"STOP IT!" The man began to shout out enraged before the outstretched hand of the assailant silenced him.
"What did I say about manners?" she growled back to the frightened parents. She stared at the parents for a moment leaving her hand outstretched until satisfied they had been silenced once again. She lowered her arm and placed her attention back to the child. "Now where were we? Oh yes, Mister Bear."
"Please..I don't want to." the child pleaded once again.
"Who do you love more child? Mommy and Daddy or Mister Bear?" The assailant responded.
"Um...Mommy and Daddy?" the child responded.
"I thought so. Now if you like Mommy and Daddy the way they are you will do what I asked okay?"
The child nodded reluctantly taking the knife to her bear's neck and running the blade along it.
"Now be careful child that blade is really sharp. You don't want to cut yourself." The assailant warned as she watched the child with glee.
It took only a few moments but soon the knife separated the bear's head from it's body sending the head to the floor with some of the stuffing falling out floating to the ground around the head. The eyes of the bear looked up at the child, the everlasting smile still on it's face. The child looked down at her bear in tears begging him for forgiveness.
"Now you see child, that wasn't so hard was it? And the great thing is it's not much harder to do on Mommy and Daddy either." The assailant said into the child's ear.
The child looked back at the assailant with a horrified look. "No, please don't kill Mommy or Daddy. You said you wouldn't you promised!"
The assailant snickered. "Dear child please be calm. I'm not going to kill your Mommy or Daddy. Besides what good would all this work be if their was no one to remember it? It's not always about taking a life sweetheart.....
It's about sending a message."
