The arboretum was dark, having gone from day to night. IT was one of Lizzie’ favorite times of the day. Very few people came by at night, which was fine by Lizzie. It meant she had the place to herself.
When the Chief Engineer created a castle for the arboretum, Lizzie had secretly replicated a Maid Marion costume for herself. Tonight, she changed into the costume and wandered through the trees, pretending she was really in Sherwood Forest. She didn’t do this very often, as she was bound to get caught if she did, and people would begin to think she was nuts. But every once in a while it was fun. She had a holodeck program she liked to use as well, but there was something about being in a real forest…
As she was walking near the castle she heard a noise like something moving through the trees. She looked around, surprised. She was alone. Her birds would let her know if someone come into the room. They were being quiet, though.
Something landed in the tree behind her, making her jump. Lizzie turned around quickly and looked up. And stopped dead in her tracks. There was a man standing in the tree. And not just any man. He was dressed in dark green tights, short pants, a white shirt and a vest. And a green hat with a feather. It couldn’t be… she told herself.
“Welcome to Sherwood Forest!†he said cheerfully.
“Robin Hood?†Lizzie asked, looking around to see if she could see anyone else.
The man smiled at her and jumped down to the ground. “Don’t you recognize me, Marion? The Crusades haven’t changed me that much.â€
“Uh… Yes.’ The man did look an awful lot like Errol Flynn… And Errol Flynn was her favorite Robin… “I do remember you. You just.. caught me by surprise.â€
Robin grinned and put his hands on her shoulders. “It’s good to see you again, Marion.â€
Before Lizzie could respond, she heard the sound of a hunting horn and hoof beats. “Company?†she asked, uncertain of what to expect next.
“The Sheriff!†Robin said, looking up. “I must go. I’ll find you,†he promised. “Say nothing to the Sheriff, I don’t want you getting involved. It’s too dangerous.†With that he jumped back into the tree, grabbed a vine and swung away.
Lizzie stood there, mouth open as a hunting party raced by on horseback and disappeared.
Lizzie began to laugh. It had to be something put into the holoemitters. Whoever did it, she liked their sense of humor.
Still chuckling, she went back into the back room to change and go to sleep on one of the couches.
