"Fighters are launching," Anli said, looking over to Munich.
"Lock the phaser on targets of opportunity and clear a path for the Fighter launch." Munich ordered. "Full weapon spread, we can reload the magazines at star base."
The Phaser Band locked onto three targets and lashed out, the Ground emplacement that had first fired was now a crater; a second shot hit a small emplacement nearer the target of the fighter strike while the third burst hit at the coordinated painted by Team one. "The torpedoes would rain like artillery fire in the area around known weapon stations. The sheer power of a Photon on a planetary surface is not often seen.
Munich watched. "Second Volley fire."
As Kela fired the second volley, another alert appeared on her console. "Another wave of fire incoming. This one seems to be coming from a nearby moon." She announced as she looked up from her console to Munich.
"Get a lock on the source and use all weapons to destroy threats, the fighters will handle the ground." Munich stood as he gave commands in proper Military fashion as he had been taught to in the Schools he attended in his youth. "Split the work, up here we handle down Dere Fighters can have it."
Kela noded as she looked back to the console and prepared another volley, this time locked onto the source of the second wave. She closed her eyes and tried to maintain focus. All the stress coming in from all sides were pulling her mentally and she couldn't risk being pulled away and having one of her previous symbiont hosts taking over. She needed to stay. None of the other hosts had the skills in tactical that she had for a situation like this.
Munich eyed the moon firing the missiles; there had to be a way to get them to stop and save the fighters. "Tactical, how long to assemble a tri-cobalt for firing?"
"About two and a half minutes." Kela answered, looking up from her console.
"Get all three ready. In days of Earth history the Atom Bomb was used as a deterrent from continued war, I want that Moon targeted, prepare to send a warning that we will be firing a cobalt weapon once they are on line... no need to give them advanced warning."
Kela's eyes widened. Tri-Cobalt was only used under extreme circumstances and using them often requires high authority. "Are you serious? I hope your only planning on using them as a bluff. The amount of people we could hurt, Orion or not, could be in the millions."
"Designate Colbalts as Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Fukushima." Munich said calmly. Prepare to fire as soon as they are ready." He had played long enough with the Orion Syndicate, time to end this war.
[Fighters]
Phoenix left the atmosphere, happy to be back in space. At least briefly. She said nothing as the chatter from the other pilots came across her comms. She was focused on the battle before her as the Calypso launched its weapons.
"Phoenix to base, bogeys on our six."
A wing of fighters came from the backside of the planet. They were heading straight for the Calypso.
"I'm on it," she announced, altering her course to intercept. "Wedge, Bojay, you're with me."
"Bojay is always after the ladies you know." Wedge joked as he brought his fighter into formation.
"And always a head of you." Bojay replied while jockying for his place in the formation.
"If you don't knock it off, you'll both be eating my dust," Phoenix shot back. "Split off, delta pattern." She fired her thrusters and headed straight for the lead plane, shooting two rockets as she did so. At the last second, she pulled up sharply, flipping her fighter so she could shoot at them again.
Bojay did a snap roll after letting loose some micro torps and to bring his Phasers to bear on another plane.
Wedge was staying close to the lead; he was her protection of her six ; anything coming to endanger her would not last long. HE fired at a plane while staying close , he looked for an opening to get through then flip to flank the enemy.
"Don't they say only the good die young?" Phoenix asked. Then, without waiting for a reply, launched a volley of torpedoes into the middle of a pack of three fighters, following it with her phasers firing. She'd either blow a hole through the middle of them and come out the other side or crash and burn in the attempt.
Wedge saw what the Lead was doing and a couple of his own bursts destroyed what Phoenix did not get with her attacks. His job was to clear a path with her and get to the ship to give support.
Bojay had his sights on a small pair that were trying to get a flanking action. The lead bird took the hit in the shields as the torpedoes came a second later in the open shield, striking the ship and destroying it and the pilot. The other trialing bird tried a snap roll but Bojay hit his laterals as he knew no pilot would fly through the explosion and there were not many directions to evade from behind the dead craft.
"Strike two here Lead." The phasers took out the shield ahead of the single torpedo struck home. "TRy not to get too far apart or the hunters become the hunted."
"Strike three is yours, Bojay," Phoenix said over the comms.
Bojay hated 'leftovers but then things like that happen. The targeting came into place and the burst of Phasers shattered at closer range the shielding and pierced through the hull to the power source. The brilliant flash as the ship exploded showed the effectiveness of the attack.
"Sorry, no leftovers today." He joked as he closed information again.
"Phoenix to base. All clear here. We're moving around the planet to find the bogey base."
She turned and headed in the direction the enemy fighters had come from, using her ship's sensors to follow the trail. "Wedge, Bojay, let's clean out the viper's nest."
"I hate snakes." Bojay said from his position in the attack pattern.
"Time to take the fight to them for a change, I hate being defensive." Wedge checked his sensors, no reason to be flanked and caught off guard.
The three flew low and fast, skimming meters above the hills. Twice they spotted SAMs. The first fighter shot down the SAMs, the second targeted the facility. The third made sure nothing was left.
The process was quick and efficient.
Before the fighters reached their destination, they were joined by three other fighters and formed a wing.
"Target sited, 500 meters. Loading missiles," Phoenix said. "Weapons are hot."
