Getting Assigned

Posted on Sun Jan 19th, 2014 @ 3:05pm by 1st Lieutenant Leroy Mangalia

409 words; about a 2 minute read

Mission: Tabula Rasa
Location: Starbase 218
Timeline: Back Story

ON:

Leroy sat at the bar on Starbase 218, reading over a novel from the 19th Century. Reading always allowed him time to relax after particular trying missions. Right now he was off duty, and near the part of the base that allowed his fighter to stay docked. As he read, turning page after page, his comm chirped.

-^-Gunnery Sergeant Mangalia, please report to the Commanders office on the double.-^- Leroy looked confused but placed a marker and stood. His tab was paid, and his scotch was gone. Standing he made his way to the other side of the base, a forty minute walk. He could have had it site to site, but he was a Marine. Exercise was essential.

After the long walk, he stood infront of Commander Holden. He had been placed in charge of the base after the previous Captain had been transferred to 001. "Sir, you called?"

"I did Gunny," the Commander said waving the man to a seat. "I have been ordered to send you to Theta Fleet. We're going a different direction with our fighter program, and unfortunately I'm losing the man that could make that happen."

Leroy frowned a little and looked at Holden. "So I'm being sent to another fleet? To what, be just a stick jockey?"

"No Gunny, you'll be in charge of a fighter wing on a solid ship. The USS Calypso, a ship you may have heard of before."

"I have heard of that. Mom and Dad got a message from a man on that ship, it'd be nice to meet him." Starting to rise, the Commander smiled and tossed a black ornate box at Leroy.

"There's one other thing Gunny. I've been ordered to promote you. I know you weren't up for one for a few more years, but Command doesn't want a Gunnery Sergeant in charge of a fighter group. Congratulations Master Sergeant." Leroy opened the box and smiled broader than he usually did. Taking off the old rank from right below his combadge, the Master Sergeant rank fell in place.

"Thanks Commander. Keep in touch, when do I leave?"

"A couple of days at the least. Take some leave before you vanish with the best fighter I have in my bays." Leroy smiled and stood, then saluted before being dismissed. It might be enjoyable to take a couple days off before trying to find where his new duty station was going to be.
