1,100 words; about a 6 minute read

Mission: Tabula Rasa
Location: Planetside, on the shore

[CONTINUED]

[OLD]

The sun was just above the trees when they began to smell the salty tang of sea air. "I would love to catch some fish for dinner," Sam commented, although she wasn't sure where the idea of fish came from. Some creature that lived in the water, but why she remembered that and nothing more was frustrating.

[NEW]

Chumani continued to follow the group. She was interested is exploring where they were headed.

Sterling was close enough to hear the woman called Sam. "Maybe I can help," he offered, "As long as our backside is protected."

"Okay. We'll set up a group to catch fish, a group to explore and a group to keep watch." Sam looked around at the others. "Anyone have any other suggestions?"

"I'll keep watch," Sterling volunteered. He didn't know why, but it just felt like the right thing for him to do.

Sam nodded. "I'll look around. I want to see if there's more to this village than just fishing."

"No one really trusts me with anything, so I'm going to try this... what did you call it? Fishing thing? Can't be THAT hard." Ana noted, dryly.

Chumani nodded and walked into one of the buildings that had a rotted boat type object that leaned on the outside of the building. She poked into one of the rotted cabinets and yelped as something struck and bit her. "Ouch!"

Sam turned to Cam. "Do you two want to help me?"

Cam shrugged, "Sure, it sounds like an idea"

Chumani started to move back outside her vision blurred and she went down with a loud crash. She twitched silently as venom coursed into her blood stream and started to paralyze her.

Sam turned to Yvette. "Can you help her?"

Nurse Jaynes heard the commotion and the captain. "Yes, Captain." She rushed over to the woman and kneeled down with her backpack. She opened the bag to pull out a tricorder.

Sam moved over to the cabinet, took a stick, and carefully opened the door to see what had caused Chumani's injury.

The cabinet was filled with hooks, some rusted and some still serviceable, knives, bubbles and lures. Clearly fishing equipment. A former occupant had put a strange-looking anemone on a shelf. It was now dried to the point of near-petrification, but its spikes were razor-sharp. It had been leaning precariously and fell to the ground as Sam opened the door.

"I think I found the cause," she announced. "But I have no idea if there's an antidote around here."

She again turned to Cam. "See if you and Kara can find anything that might be an antidote. I'll look in here and the attached rooms. But I really don't know if these people would have anything by way of an antidote."

Anastasia was looking along the water. She noticed the algae on the rocks. She looked back towards the group. The algae looked very absorbent. She grabbed one of the rocks, and noted that the algae started trying to dry out her hand. She ran it to Sam. "Put it over the wound. It'll draw some of the toxin out. Buy us some time at least." Her head was dizzy. It was like trying to remember something you never quite knew.

Sam didn't ask questions. She could do that later. She put the section of the rock with the most algae against the contact point and held it there. After a minute she had to grab something to put between her hand and the algae. "I see why you used this," she said to Anastasia. "I don't know how much it will draw out, but at least it's worth a try."

"It was just... instinct... I don't quite know how to explain it." Anastasia replied. She eyed the fish on the floor. She eyed it, carefully. "If we... stabbed it with a stick.." Anastasia said, absent-mindedly. "...it would be a close combat weapon." She added. "It's something. She turned back to Chumani. "Uhm... So... fish toxin... hmm... I'm not really... what's the word... uh... I don't know if I'm the right person to fix this."

Sterling spoke up. "I think I might be, or at least I might be able to help."

Searching through a nearby building, Cam and Kara were following Sam,s suggestion and were looking for an antidote. Half the problem was, Cam couldn't remember what an 'Antidote' was. Glancing around a mostly empty room, he saw a metal box mounted on the far wall. The box had spots of white paint with the remnants of a green cross in the middle of it, "Hay Kara, what do you think that is?" He asked, motioning towards it.

Kara looked the box over. "No idea, but at this point, I want to take anything we find back to the others, just in case," she said. She looked for a stick and carefully prodded the box to see if she could slip it open. When it didn't work, she carefully opened the box and looked inside.

Inside they found several long bits of rolled up cloth, a few brownish coloured bottles with labels and strange writing on them. There were also Pads of cotton, something that smelt like methanol and several other pieces of cloth, ranging in size from thin and long to square

Looking at each item, Cam was unsure of what to make of them. After a moment, two words came to him, "field kit" he said, in a half whisper

She looked at him for a moment. It sounded right.

Kara put the contents of the metal box into her bag and continued to look around the room. "I wonder if there's anything else in here we can make use of?"

They searched for more, but, finding nothing, went back to the others.

Chumani stirred a bit.

Anastasia smiled, as she grabbed the woman's wrist. "Good. Get me something sweet. Fruit, something that's quick and easy to digest."

Sam remembered passing some trees that bore fruit so she nodded and hurried out of the abandoned village to find some fruit.

She returned twenty minutes later with an armload of fruit. She set it gently on the ground next to Anastasia. "This should help. There's enough for the others, if they want some."
