Mission:
Tabula Rasa
Location: Planetside
ON
The group trudged for several hours through the woods and jungle, taking a more direct path to the ocean.
Sam was careful to make and follow a crude map so they would be able to get back to the compound. Although she hoped that once they found the village they would find a path. The village had to be connected to the compound in some way.
Sterling grew tired of staying in the back. Wanting a change of pace, he move to the front and then moved further forward looking for any clues as to where the village might be and for that matters clues as to where and who the group was.
Anastasia would have been happy with clues as to where the nearest thing she could wear was. She winced, as the rocks wore at her bare feet some more. "Son of a-" She muttered, for perhaps the third time that hour. She would glare briefly, at Fred, before shaking the rock free, and continuing on.
Sam turned to Sterling. "See that tree on the horizon? The one with the tip that looks broken? The top is hangng at a 120 degree angle. We'll head for that. Keep the rocky outcropping between us and the tree and we'll continue in a relatively straight line. From there, we'll see where we stand." She indicated the map. "If this map is correct, we should see the ocean from there." She hoped, anyway.
Tom stopped Anastasia. "I have some strips of cloth you could wrap around your feet. It's not much, but it's better than going barefoot."
Anastasia shrugged. "I'll get used to it. Don't worry about it. The shoes, believe it or not, are the last piece of clothing I'm missing right now."
"Okay. Let me know if you change your mind," Tom said.
Standing about three meters ahead of the group, Cameron surveyed the path before them.
Nurse Jaynes has remained silent as she listened to her crewmembers trying to find a village. She came to make her medical skills useful if anybody needed her. Yvette stopped walking for a minute to adjust her backpack that contained some first aid supplies.
"See anything?" Sam asked Cameron.
"I'm not sure, maybe" Cameron said, pointing to what looked like something poking out of the flat plain, "what do you think that is?"
Sam squinted to see if she could make the item clearer. "I'm not sure, either. "It's on the way to the shore, so we can stop and have a look."
Chumani walked past Sam and Cameron her step falls steadfast and quiet, her feet were clothed in some soft of soft leather. She almost wanted to bump both each of them in the shoulder as she went by to entice them to continue to move forward. She said ever so softly "Moving forward towards it certainly beats standing and gawking at it doesn't it?" She smiled as she wondered why people insisted on always needing to stand and look when if they continued to move forward what they wanted to see would appear right before them at the right time.
Sam let Chumani pass. If she was so eager to move ahead, Sam wasn't going to question her. Although Sam was the one with the map. She looked up at the sun to measure its distance to the horizon. "We can see what it is as we pass, but I'd like to get to that village before nightfall. We can camp there and head back to the compound in the morning."
I'd be glad to rest my feet as soon as we stop, Yvette thought as she continued to follow them.
"It shouldn't be much longer," Sam replied, not aware that they were speaking telepathically.
Sterling for some reason was not tired, he had gotten his second wind. He looked carefully around the group looking for anything dangerous or out of the ordincary.
Chumani continued to walk, her pace was not very fast and the others would catch up easily. Once in a while she saw a bush and she investigated and gathered berries from it and placed them into her pouch that she carried.
They continued in a relatively straight line until they reached the strange object Cameron spotted. It was a large steel beam sticking out of the ground. There appeared to be no rhyme nor reason to its existence.
Sam walked around it, looking carefully for any sign of why it was there, but there was nothing but the metal pole. So she made note of it on her map and continued on. "Maybe we'll find something later that will help explain what that is," she said.
The sun was just above the trees when they began to smell the salty tang of sea air. "I would love to catch some fish for dinner," Sam commented, although she wasn't sure where the idea of fish came from. Some creature that lived in the water, but why she remembered that and nothing more was frustrating.
