Samantha slipped her hand through Damon's as they walked out of the building into a large, open compound. It was once hard-packed dirt but now was marred by scattered clumps of weeds.
A large well sat in the middle of the compound, protected by a wooden roof and a large, flat cover.
There were a number of people in the compound and others making their way out of buildings.
Sam took note of the one they were in, mentally marking it as "hers." Well, hers and Damon's. She glanced up at him and squeezed his hand and smiled. Then she took a deep breath and headed for a large clump of people.
Cameron and Kara were already wandering around the area, trying to get an idea of where they were. They never moved more than a meter from one another, as Cameron figured it would be safer, also if this connection to this woman was all he could remember, he wasn't about the let it go
As they walked, the ran into another two people who were holding hands as the walked, so Cameron thought they might know where they were, "Hay, excuse me mate" He said, grabbing hold of Damon's arm, "mind if I ask you something?"
Damon's body went ridged a moment before he roughly pulled his arm away. He broke contact with Samantha and squared off against the newcomer. "Keep your hands off me...mate." He growled. The look in his eyes betrayed his desire to make an example of this trespasser.
Cameron quickly fell into a defensive stance, "Woah there mate, I'm not trying to hurt you, I just want to ask if you know where we are?"
Sam put a gentle hand on Damon's arm to restrain him. "It's okay," she said. "He doesn't remember anything, either."
"You don't know that." He said, shrugging off her hand. "for all we know, this could be the guy that put us here."
Alexandra began to study the man with her eye. For some reason the information provided was leading her instinct to believe this man was not deceiving them. Upon further inspection she soon made another startling discovery. "Damon, I don't think this man is the one who put us here. He has the same kind of technology in his body as we do, just not the optical implant. Some of his augments are superficial hidden by his clothes, and some are more intertwined within him. Have a closer look."
"I don't care who he is or what he has going on with him. All he needs to know is that if he touches me again we're going to have a problem." Damon took a step forward.
"Damon, he's not responsible. He's a victim, too." Instinctively, Sam used her telepathy to reach out to Damon on a more intimate level.
And then she didn something that was probably incredibly stupid. She stepped between the two men.
"Samantha...move." Damon kept his eyes trained on the newcomer. His fists balled in anticipation of a move being made.
Sam didn't move, but she turned to look at the man Damon felt was a threat. "Who are you?" she asked.
Kara saw the standoff and went to Cam's side to give him backup if he needed it.
Damon saw someone move in to support the man Samantha was talking to. Damon pointed at her. "This doesn't concern you. Don't get involved."
"Then don't start something," Kara retorted. She eyed both Sam and Damon and wondered why they were picking a fight.
"in that case i'll make this simple, you go that way and we'll go this way. I don't want to have to see you two again." Damon stood his ground.
He was stubborn, Sam realized. And pigheaded. But this was not the time to pick a fight with anyone. "I'm sorry," she said to the other two.
The other woman, Kara, was also a telepath. "I don't know why Damon reacted as he did. I apologize. Let me know if you learn anything about why there's so much animosity between these two."
Kara was surprised to hear someone speaking directly to her mind. She'd heard whispers, but put them down to odd echoes in the area, not to actual thoughts. "Umm, okay. I'm Kara, by the way."
Sam flashed her a quick smile. "Samantha."
Then she turned and headed off with Damon. When they were alone, she turned to him. "Why did you pick a fight with that man?"
Damon shrugged. "I didn't like the look of him," he lied. The truth was this sort of thing had a habit of getting around. Pretty soon most of the people here would know to watch their step around him and the people with him. It was the only way he could think to protect Samantha and Alexandra ... at least until he got his hands on a real weapon.
Sam put a hand on his cheek and looked him in the eye. You can't lie to a Betazoid, ran through her mind. She knew it was true. He was protecting her. It made her feel warm inside and she leaned forward and kissed him. At the same time, she wished she could get him to understand that he didn't need to protect her from EVERYONE.
"It's good to know we have someone like you watching out for us." Alexandra complimented Damon. Although she had not interfered like Sam had for some reason she almost did as if she felt she could have combatted the aggressive man. She would monitor him to ensure they kept to their word and stayed away from Sam.
Sam looked from Damon to Alexandra, "We still have a few hours of light. I want to see what's outside this compound while I can."
With that, she headed out to the wilderness beyond the buildings.
