Mission:
What Dreams May Come?
Timeline: TBD
Sterling looked down at the insturment panel in front of him. He was a Security Invesitgations officer not blessed shuttle pilot, but here he was playing delivery boy, bringing a new runabout to his new assignment, well techncially his first assignment.
He just hoped and prayed that nothing went wrong. He'd taken some basic courses between his junior and senior year of college, but he had no formal training. Still who was he a mere to question the wisdom of some Admiral setting on his butt someplace in San Francisco?
^=^Calypso this is Morning Rose. Come in please.^=^
He was given docking instructions and thanks mostly to the computer landed safely in the hangar bay. He stepped out of the craft and made his way out of the area, duffel back over his right shoulder.
It didn't take him long to find the quarters he had been assigned and stow his stuff, at least the bag. The rest of his belongings, what little there were would be transported form the shuttle to his room. He was grateful that he wouldn't be sharing a room with anyone because of his speical circumstances. He wasn't sure if Star Fleet normally allowed enlisted personnel to have their own room, but he didn't care. At least they were willing to make accomodations for him.
By the time he had reached his room though he was begining to feel a little uneasy. There was somehing about the people that he passed. They seemed distant, haunted and just wrong. He wasn't sure why or what caused it but it rasied the hairs on the back of his head.
He decided to report in to the Commander right away even though technically he wasn't scheduled to officially report in until the next day. Instinct led him to that decision and now he found himself in front of her Ready Room. He pressed the chime.
Sam had been reading over sensor logs, hoping to find something to help find a cause for the prevalent nightmares. When she heard the chime she turned off the screen and turned to the door. "Come in."
The young Warrant Officer walked in but only a few steps. He wasn't especially intimidated by her rank, but he certainly respected it. He stopped, trying not to focus on her obvious beauty, stood to attention and saluted, "Sir, Warrant Officer Sterling Kamala, Security Investigations Officer reporting for duty. I hope I was expected."
He brought his left hand down and his right, which held the PAdD with his bio and orders, tapped nervously a few times till he became aware of it and stopped himself.
"At ease," Sam said. "I didn't expect you until tomorrow. Come, have a seat." She took the PADD from him and thumbed through it to make sure everything was in order, then affixed her thumb print to it and handed it back.
"Have a seat," she said, indicating the chair opposite her desk. "Tell me what you expect out of the Calypso."
He took the PADD back from her and slowly, almost reluctantly relaxed and moved into the room and took the offered seat.
"Well sir, this is really my first assignment, but my hope is it will be a long term one. I'm not looking for it to be a stepping stone to some quote unquote higher position. That does not mean I'm not looking to grow and mature as both an officer and a man, I am, it just means that I'm not an opportunist.
Frankly I hope I find myself doing paperwork or acting a brig officer or just a general security officer. Because when I am acting in my official capacity, it means that either someone has been killed or there has been some real crime committed.
What about you? What do you expect of me and how do you prefer to be addressed; sir, ma'am, or by your rank?"
"Captain or Ma'am. I'm not too formal," she said. "As for what I expect, I expect you to keep the rules and not get into too much trouble and I expect you to help out as needed. I'm not the type to expect people to do their jobs and nothing else. If you can help in another area, it would be appreciated. Especially during a mission."
"I'm quite willing to do so s... ma'am. Where ever I can fit in. I have a tendency to analyze a situation, try to come up with a solution and love solving puzzles and mysteries. I also tend to be able to see both sides of an argument. At one time I seriously considered going into diplmacy, but then I had well a personal situation came up so I changed directions.
You just don't want me anywhere near the warp coil or even in Engineering. Other than that I'll go whereever you send me."
"Good. I'm sure Lieutenant Lynx will be happy to have you on board."
"Thank you ma'am, I am looking forward to working with him. May I make an observation ma'am?"
"Please do," she replied.
"Well, I may be totally off base here. I mean I've just come aboard. But you see, I am an empath. Not an especially strong one, but I... well I've sensed a lot of, tension. Like people are on edge. I have no idea what it means, or if it is anything other than just my imagination. Is there something I should know about?"
Sam sighed. Might as well tell him what he's in for. "Yes. Most of the crew has been having trouble with nightmares. Commander Vance and Doctor Bowen are looking into a medical reason for it. So far, however, we've found nothing concrete. I'm a telepath and it's been ... interesting lately. I've had to put up a telepathic buffer around my quarters, which helps a little, but it doens't keep me from having the same problem as the crew. So, sleep while you can and see the doctor if you need any help."
"I understand ma'am, thanks for letting me know. If you have nothing more for me, I guess I'll be going. I want to stop by and see the Counselor for my boarding evaulation and check in with Lieutenant Lynx."
"Nothing at the moment," she said. "Once again, welcome aboard."
"Thank you ma'am. May I be dismissed?"
"Yes, Warrant Officer, you're dismissed."
"Yes ma'am!?" he said snapping a salute before turning to walk out the door.
