[OLD]
She put her hand over his and squeezed it gently. "That lid is slipping." She looked in his eyes, worried about how he'd take this. "Cam, I care about you and I want you to be well."
[NEW]
The waiter brought their food before Cam could reply and set it out before them. The food looked and smelled delicious and Kara thought it was a good time to change the subject before Cam walked out on her. "Okay, tell me something you like to do in your off time."
Glad for the change of subject, Cam pushed his current thoughts to the back of his mind. He didn't want to think about it right now. Enjoying the smell of the meals, Cam repeated Kara's question, "What do I do on my time off, hmm, read, workout, catch-up work. To tell you the truth, I don't take much time off"
She raised an eyebrow. No wonder he was having problems. "I think we need to remedy that. At least a little."
Cam shook his head, "i don't have the time. If it's not dealing with a problem on ship, then it's a complaint someone's made against one of my marines"
"It seems to work for Captain Raine," Kara countered. "He found time. If he can, you can."
"That's easier said than done. Besides, he went through officer training, I got a field commission. I don't have the training that he did" Cam said, shrugging slightly, "I'm sure I'll have it running smoothly in time"
"I'm sure you will. Maybe when he gets back he can give you a few pointers." Kara let the conversation lag as she focused on the meal.
Digging into his meal, Cam began to worry, Captain Raine returning? Great, he's going to replace me he thought, worried that the Commadore had learnt about her, fault.
Kara watched him begin to fidget as he ate. "What's wrong?"
"Um? Oh it's nothing. Don't worry" Cam said, smiling. He didn't want to put his conserns on her shoulders, especially on their first date. This was something he'd have to sort out himself a little later
She was skeptical, but didn't push her point. Instead, she turned the conversation to general topics while they ate.
"So, you haven't told me about your family? I assume you have one" Cam asked between mouthfuls of pasta
"I did. They died in an attack near the end of the war," she said quietly. "It's okay. I've learned to enjoy my own company."
Cam smiled, "how the hell can you keep so positive about everything"
"Because I've seen what can happen if we're not out here making a difference," she said. "And because, in spite of the bad things I've seen, I've seen more good. That makes it easier to be positive."
"Sometimes I wonder why your a marine and not a ships councillor" Cam said, finishing off the last of his Pasta. "Anyway, I understand you enjoy going hunting. Perhaps we could go for an adventure together next time we have shore leave?"
"Sounds like fun," she said. It would be nice to get out in the wilderness somewhere for a break. It would also be interesting to see how good a hunter Cam was.
"Great, I'll write up the requests tomorrow"
"Good." She pushed back her empty plate and picked up her glass. "What sort of camping do you like to do?"
"Camping? There are different types? I thought camping was find a spot and set up your tent"
Kara grinned. "That's one way to camp. Another is with a backpack and a sleeping bag. Or there's snow camping. That requres snow shoes, a shovel and lots of warm clothing and bedding. There are others, but that's a good start."
"Snow camping sounds interesting. I'll have to dig out my gear though, I wonder if it still fits"
"How long's it been since you last used it?" she asked, curious.
"Hmm, wow it's got to be almost, 15 years. The last time I was in an alpine environment I was on the boarder, looking for a white factory"
"Then it's high time you have another alpine adventure -- this time without the Dominion."
Cam pretended to be disappointed, "aww, no threat of death? That just takes all the fun out of it. We don't have a reason to huddle together in fear anymore" he said, a smile tugging at his lips
Kara picked up a spare napkin and threw it at him. "If I'm going to huddle anywhere, it won't be in fear."
Cam smiled, "oh really? Than I'll have to think of something else to make you huddle"
"I'm sure you'll think of something," she teased. Kara kind of liked the idea of huddling close to Cam. And in the snow they would need to keep warm.
"Well, I better start thinking of a reason" Cam said, smiling
Kara was about to comment when the waiter came to take away their empty dishes.
The waiter came and removed their empty dishes. When he left, Kara turned to Cam. "How about another dance?"
As the two moved out on the dance floor the orchestra began to play a slow waltz.
