Breaking the news

1,050 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: A Pirate's Life
Location: Marine Deck (Deck 14)

Cam was sitting in his office, finishing up his reports on both the Orion mins and the Borg encounter. Over the past few weeks he'd neglected his duties as marine CO as he tried to sort a few things out himself, but now he was playing catch up. After completing his final report for Marine HQ back on Earth, Cam finally decided to deal with some personal business that had been gnawing at him since his recovery from the underground Borg compound, his feeling for Kara, a staff sergeant under his command.

Taking a deep breath, Cam code locked his console and made his way to enlisted territory in search of Kara.

Kara was dressed in a pair of black shorts and a red tank top with the Marine Corps logo emblazoned on the front. She was stretched out on the floor of her quarters, legs spread apart, as she reached forward to gently work her leg and back muscles.

The exercises were more suited to dance that combat, so she preferred to do them in private. Bon Jovi played in the background.

The door chimed a second time before she heard it. "Come in, she called."

Putting on his best poker face, Cam opened the doors to Kara's quarters and stepped inside, "hay Melo, busy?" He asked, trying to seem casual all the while thinking don't screw this up, don't screw this up

"No," she said, getting to her feet. "Computer, stop music."

"Come in." She waived to the couch, "Have a seat." She glanced at his face to see if she could get an idea of what he wanted, but he showed nothing. That made her both curious and nervous. She sat on one end of the couch and turned to face Cam. "What's up?"

Taking a seat next to Kara, Cam sighed, "Kara, I was wondering, are you involved with someone?"

That was an odd question. "No. Why?"

"Well, we've been through some tough situations together, The Orion Mines, the Borg incident, and I've started to notice something has been effecting my judgement lately. I care about you, a lot more than a Unit CO should, and I'm not sure if telling you is the right thing to do but here I am" Cam said, trying to keep his face straight.

That wasn't what Kara expected to hear from him. Had she heard him correctly? She put a hand up to her hair and dropped it again. A smile spread across her face. Wait. But maybe he didn't mean it the way she wanted him to. Maybe he cared about her like a brother. That would be hard to deal with. The smile disappeared and she looked over at Cam. "Like me how?" she asked bluntly. Might as well find out for sure.

Cam smiled than, without another word, he wrapped his arm around her waist, pulled her in closer and kissed her. This was a big gamble on Cam's part, if Kara felt the same way than it would be ok, but if she didn't, things could become very awkward between them. After a moment, Cam pulled back and tried to gauge Kara's reaction, "does that answer your question?"

"Definitely." She couldn'
t help smiling happily. The kiss was very nice. Nicer than she'd imagined it would be. She put a hand on the side of his neck. "I have to admit that I feel the same way about you."

"That's good to know, I wasn't sure if you felt the same way" Cam said, grabbing hold of her hand, "I guess the question is where do we go from here?"

That was a good question. She wasn't sure. "I think we should spend time together; get to know each other." She paused and looked at him intently. "And you need to get counseling for your PTSD. I don't want a repeat of what happened in the gym."

Cam sighed and nodded, "alright, I'll do that, I don't want to hurt you ever again"

Kara smiled, the last of her worries gone. She didn't want to wake up one night with a knife at her throat because Cam was having a flashback. She didn't want to have to hurt him -- not even in self-defense. But as long as he was getting help, she knew they'd be able to work through it.

She looked away, both shy and nervous, then back to Cam. "So, um, where do we go frohere?"

Cam smiled, "well, how about dinner. Tomorrow say 1900, holodeck 5?"

"That sounds great. How should I dress?" she asked. It was a very girlie thing to ask, but she couldn't help herself. "Casual, formal?"

"Just casual, you can turn up in your BDU's if you realy want"

Kara thought for a moment, then shook her head. "No, I'd rather not be thinking about work." Her eyes met his and she smiled, still finding it amazing that he cared about her.

Cam laughed, "ok, how about a formal dinner? Dress, tux, the whole nine yards" he said, thinking it through himself. It wouldn't be a bad start to their relationship and if things went south for whatever reason, at least they'd have a nice meal

Kara laughed with him. "I will do whatever you want," she assured him. "I'm looking forward to spending some time with you."

Cam took Kara's hands in his, "there isn't anyone I'd rather spend time with"

Kara wanted to pinch herself to make sure she wasn't dreaming. On second thoughts, it was probably better if she didn't. At least not in front of Cam. She smiled happily. "Me, too."

Returning Kara's smile, Cam sighed, "alright, i'll see you tomorrow on holodeck 6, 1900 on the dot. Don't be late" he said, standing up and turning towards the door. Just as he was about to leave, he turned back to her, "i know it's an odd question, but do you own a dress?"

She had a dress at one time. There wasn't much of an opportunity to wear one on a starship. "I think it's in the back of my closet." If it wasn't, still there, she'd get one.

Kara stood and smiled. "I'll see you tomorrow."
