1,250 words; about a 6 minute read
Mission:
Falling Star
Location: Shuttlecraft: Cerberus
Timeline: After "Mending Fences And Hearts"
ON:
After a long time of holding Ronnie and eventually falling asleep with her in his arms, Damion finally woke up. His rubbed his eyes slightly and let out a yawn as he looked down at Ronnie laying there on his chest. He couldn't help but smile, seeing the image of her laying there brought back a lot of fond memories of before all this drama and mental chaos started.
He slowly eased her off and gently placed her head on the pillow of the bunk. Damion leaned down and gently kissed her on top of her head before walking over to the replicator. He ordered his coffee, and Ronnie's favorite drink and walked back. After placing it on the table by the bunk, he made his way out of the room toward the pilot's chair to begin his work, hoping she would soon wake up and feel much better after everything she had gone through.
Ronnie woke and reached out a hand for Damion, but he wasn't there. For the briefest moment she wondered if she'd been dreaming, then as she came fully awake she looked around the room and saw the fruit smoothie he left for her. She took several minutes to wash her face before she picked up her drink and headed to the front of the shuttle. There were still a lot of unanswered questions that needed to be dealt with.
She stopped several feet from Damion and watched him as he worked at the console.
Damion was busy, plotting a course to his next contact. An old informant of Strife who would be easily persuaded to get intel and a location on where Strife would be next. On a separate screen he had the news feed up and a link to a intel hacked information board that they would use to placed the video of Vance's death.
Ronnie finished her drink and put it in the reclamator, then walked up to Damion and ran a hand through his hair. "Hi."
"You slept well." He smirked as he looked up at her and let out a sigh. "How you feeling"
"Better than I was. I still think it's a bad idea to have me here. I'm a liability, Damion. I don't want to get you in trouble -- or worse."
Damion nodded and then let out a sigh. "I know. You can still take the option of leaving and going back. I wouldn't want you to risk your life like this, especially not knowing anything about Strife, the crew, or the Nightshade itself." He leaned back and turned to her. "There is however, a point of no return Ronnie. Once we reach past a certain point, you have no choice but to stick around and get involved until an opportunity presents itself to get you safely back. As long as you know what's really going on with me now, I am happy and I feel better knowing you don't hate me anymore." He smirked and laughed softly. "Well... at least you don't hate me as much as you did."
"I don't hate you," she assured him, kissing him on top of his head. She was torn between wanting to leave so didn't get him killed and wanting to stay to make sure he didn't get hurt. She would worry about him until he got back and being with him would mean she knew where he was and what was going on. But she wasn't an Intelligence officer. She was a scientist. She groaned softly and closed her eyes, not sure what she should do.
Damion felt her worry and put his arm around her waist. He brought her down and sat her on his lap as he leaned back slightly. "I can feel your worried and torn. I can understand. If it makes you feel any better, I almost turned this mission down. That would only mean the new agent would have to learn everything there is to know about him and is crew. Thing is, I already know all that stuff. I was there and time is important. The longer the wait, the more risk there is of people getting hurt, or worse killed. No one else should suffer for a decision that should not have been made in the first place. To be honest, I feel I have to do this because I was involved and did things on there I wasn't too proud of."
Ronnie wrapped her arms around his neck and hugged him. "I know. It has to be you." She sighed. "How long do I have to decide?"
"You have until my contact gets back with me and we reach out of distance of the Calypso's long range sensors." Damion said as he laughed softly with a smile and then nodded. "As soon as we get out of range, I am gonna go find a former contact or Strife's and see if I can get some information out of him, maybe some equipment." He tapped at the console and checked the intel board again. "News of your kidnapping and Vance's death has already hit where it should. With luck, in teh next couple hours or days Strife will be getting the news too."
Another thought struck her. "How will it look if you kidnap me and then leave me where the Calypso can find me? Won't that, too, cause trouble for you?"
"No." Damion replied with a soft voice and then smirked. "Strife has known me to be soft on people. It's part of the reason why I left. Leaving you behind will only show him I haven't changed much, and it will give him a point of control. Knowing that he can hold someone hostage and threaten their life in order to make me do something. Killing Vance will seem more like a hostile and out of anger response, as it should have been, but your also right. It might cause some trouble for me. Unfortunately, thats how the job is. There is just no escaping trouble, you can't predict it, only prepare for it, if and when it happens." He smiled. "It's kind of how my life goes, sometimes."
"So, the best option was to leave me on the Calypso in the first place." She touched her forehead to his. "But that bridge has been crossed. So, what do you want me to do?"
Damion smiled and closed his eyes, feeling her forehead to his. He let out a soft sigh. "Personally, after keeping you away from me for this long, I would rather keep you closer to me, but its not about what I want. Part of me knows you would be useful, but the other knows how dangerous it is."
"Yeah. If you had left me behind, we would never have had the chance to talk and work things out." But that still didn't solve her current dilemma. "I don't want to leave you and I don't want to be a liability."
"Well then." Damion said with a smile as he ran his hand through her hair. "I guess I am just gonna have to teach you how not to be a liability. I'm gonna teach you how to think, act, and respond like an Intel officer." He smirked and then laughed softly.
A slow smile spread across her face. "I think that's a perfect solution."
