[OLD]

"Thats why I am here. The cover story is that I am here as a representative from Starfleet Intelligence. I am here to pull Wolfe out of the fire he placed himself in. I was hoping situations like this could have been avoided, but in order for this to work he has to go down this road." Max looked over to Vance and then returned his gaze back to Sam. "You know that Damion Wolfe isn't this kind of officer and he is taking a big risk to pull this off. In order to stop Gregory Strife, it has to be done. All other attempts have failed. This is the only one that shows promise."

[NEW]

"I know," Sam said quietly. "He's taking a big risk. He's got a girl here. She's a friend of mine and has no idea what's going on. This is tearing her apart. His career might be salvaged when this is all over, but I'm not sure about his relationship."

Max nodded as he walked closer to him. "I can assure you that its eating him up inside not to tell her. It was the first thing he asked me, and because I know the risk to her, I had to tell him not to. We both know why he couldn't say anything, but you have to understand closing everyone out from this was important." He moved his arms from his chest to his pockets. "I know the risk, and I have to deal with it just like everyone when it comes to the person I am most close to."

Sam looked at him with an eyebrow raised. She hadn't heard of the Admiral being in a relationship -- or spending any real time with any particular female. "Some of us make other choices," she said. She'd gone after Damon when his ship disappeared and spent eight weeks as a prisoner, not leaving until she had Damon with her.

"But with each choice comes a risk. A risk we choose to take in hopes that people see the good in it and forgo the risk." Max uncrossed his arms as he looked at her and let out a sigh. "The same risk you took when you left to find Captain Raine in hopes that Admiral Burke would see why your doing it and forgo the fact that you ran off and got caught and subjected your crew to the mental and physical torture. That is the same reason why Wolfe is doing this. Taking a risk with the woman he loves to correct a mistake from his past. You took a risk when you went out to save your husband. Damion is taking the same kind of risk, except he has no choice because he is under orders not to say anything. That obligation to his job is causing his relationship to suffer, but being a close friend you could help with that. At least give him something."

"I didn't know what we were facing. And I didn't take my crew. I took a few volunteers. We went looking for a lost ship and for Damon. I did not knowing subject my crew to mental and physical torture. If I'd known, I would have gone in alone."

"But they knew the risk and they took it for you. For your former Executive Officer. For your husband." Max placed his hands on the desk and leaned forward towards her. "And putting those volunteers and taking those risks is something that didn't matter to you because of him. Damion doesn't have that. He has nothing but his orders and whether he likes it or not he has to follow them. He doesn't have a friend in the Admiralty who will overlook those things. He isn't that fortunate."

"He's also in Intel. Although you're part of Starfleet, you have a different focus. I can't talk to Ronnie because she has to believe that the man she loves is going rogue. It won't be believable if she acts like nothing happened. Damion is going to have to do what he can to fix things or walk away when this is all over."

"The good of the many over the good of the one Captain. Intelligence is all about doing what is necessary, and sometimes that contravenes convention morals. It is why you are who you are, and we are who we are. Damion made his choice, he must not deal with the consequences." Vance replied speaking for the first time.

"She is right, Commander. She can't talk to this Ronnie without tipping this off." Max said as he looked over to Vance, holding up his hand a bit and looking back to Sam. "Intelligence officers have always known the consequences of their actions and learned to live with them. Commodore York must believe we are heartless."

"No, Commodore York believes you are Intel. Do not put words in her mouth," Sam said, wondering why this particular turn in the conversation. Was Max leading towards something, or just talking?

"There is no believing Commodore. We are who we are and that will never change no matter how our appearances may." Vance replied sharply.

Sam chose to ignore Vance's comment as she wasn't in a mood to argue semantics and nuances of phrases. "Getting back to the subject, what do you need from me, Admiral?"

"Originally, Captain." He said as he let out a sigh and cleared his throat. "I just wanted to touch base with you in regards to the situation with Wolfe. I came here to help get him out of the brig and decide that the next step is. It wouldn't be right for me to come here and not let you know what's going on. You should know. Not only as a close friend to the Admiral of the fleet but as the Captain of this ship."

"I appreciate it." She was sure he was here for more than that, but she was happy to leave it at plausible deniability. "I think your next step should be to go to the brig and have a talk with Damion."

"I'll take that as you giving me permission." Max smirked as he looked over to Vance and nodded. "Nice to see you've taken to walking instead of running, Vance. Does you good to slow down as you reach your old age." He teased as he slapped her on the shoulder and added a soft laugh. "Let keep you off the morgue's slab for a few more years, alright." He looked back to Sam and nodded again, giving her a pleased smile. "Captain." With that he headed to the door, putting back on his stern face again.

Vance simply stared at the Commodore for a moment saying nothing before turning and following Admiral Hunter out.
