Kara had a feeling Cam wasn't dead. She wasn't sure why, but there was something in the back of her mind that said he survived the blast. She found Amarylis and walked up to her.
"I'm going to look for Master Sergeant Bourne. If he survived, he's still in the caves and I can't go back to the ship without making the effort to find him."
Amarylis nodded placing her hand on Kara's shoulder. "We leave no one behind ma'am, let's go find your friend."
Kara smiled warmly. "I was hoping you'd say that." She didn't know why, but it was very important to her that she get Cam.
Kara grabbed extra ammo and informed Ronnie where they were going. "Tell the Colonel and wish us luck." Wilhelm was deep in conversation with a couple of his Marines and Kara didn't want to interrupt him. She also didn't want him to tell her no.
She grabbed a couple of flash bangs and went back to Amarylis. "Ready to go?"
Amarylis smiled. "Ma'am, I was born ready, these tin cans won't know what hit 'em."
Kara grinned. She led Amarylis down the tunnel to the main complex. She felt along the wall, moving as quickly as she could without falling or without alerting the Borg to their presence. Before long, they were in the main cavern. Kara headed right and looked for the tunnel Ronnie mentioned. They were almost at the back when she found it. She signaled to Amarylis and headed down the tunnel, unsure what to expect.
Amarylis quickly grabbed Kara's shoulder and pointed to a spot on the ceiling. A faint red dot could be seen slowly moving about, a tell-tale sign of a drone patrolling ahead. Amarylis put a silencer on her pistol. "Shhhhh." she said putting her index finger to her lips.
Kara nodded and raised her weapon. They needed to take it out quickly. One shot, one kill.
Just as they prepared themselves, the Borg walked into view, it's laser flickering up and down as it went. Turning its head to look at, It quickly scanned the two women than turned its focus back to its work. Clearly it didn't consider them a threat.
Kara put up a hand to keep Amarylis from shooting the Borg. She didn't want to fire unless it was absolutely necessary.
"I don't know about you ma'am, but I don't want to be the centre of fifty drone's attention when they decide we aren't here for a cup of tea." Amarylis said intently watching the lone drone ahead.
"Neither do I," Kara said. She found a rock outcropping and stepped behind it, waiting for the Borg to pass. When it did, she continued down the corridor, looking for Cam.
Amarylis sighed and reluctantly lowered her pistol allowing the drone to pass. She knew eventually it would show her no mercy, why she should allow it that courtesy?
"It's more important to be unseen," Kara assured her quietly. "If we start killing drones now, we'll draw attention to ourselves."
She had no idea where to look for Cam, so she closed her eyes and reached out with her thoughts. She'd spoken to him often enough to recognize his thought signature. Even as a Borg, there would still be something of Cam left for her to locate. For several minutes she searched, finally locating him two rooms down and to the left. "Got him. This way."
She waited for another Borg to pass and proceeded down the tunnel. Second room on the left. She paused outside the chamber and glanced at Amarylis. "Make as little noise as possible. We get Cam and get out. Okay?"
"Ma'am, you don't have to tell me, I've done this a few times before." Amarylis said with a soft laugh rolling her eyes.
"Good. This is my first." She grinned at Amarylis. It didn't matter. She was a Marine and knew about getting in and out of tight situations. They just never involved the Borg before.
"Well in that case, you're doing just fine. Lead on ma'am."
As they entered the Chamber, they saw half a dozen damaged drones standing in separate alcoves awaiting repair. The only active drone was working at one of the consoles near the rear of the room.
Amarylis pointed to the repair drone. "There, that's him. We need to act swiftly before he decides to wake his friends."
Kara looked where Amarylis pointed. He bore slight physical resembalance to Cam, but she knew it was him. "Run a distraction. I'll get Cam."
Amarylis looked around for any more active drones. "Ma'am I think we are in the clear these drones seem to be in a regeneration cycle. I'll ensure they stay that way."
Kara nodded. She really didn't have a plan, so she carefully walked over to Cam. "Cameron Bourne. It's Kara." Perhaps if she used her telepathy, she could reach him.
The Borg slowly stood up straight and turned to face Kara. Quickly scanning her with its laser, "Betazoid, female, telepathic and empathic abilities. You will be assimilated. Your distinctiveness will be added to our own"
"Alright, looks like this party has ended quickly, if you have any bright ideas ma'am, now would be the time. Otherwise....you know what i'll have to do." Amarylis stated gripping her pistols tightly.
