Mission:
The Enemy Within: Lying in Wait
Location: Borg complex
ON:
Cam awoke feeling a little light headed. He found himself in a dimly lit room, the only light emanating from several wall mounted consoles. Trying to move, he felt several straps restraining his arms, legs, and chest, preventing him from moving. After struggling for a few moments, he called out, "hay!! Let me up!!"
The air was hazy with dust from the sand. The pale green light refracted off the dust, causing the room to glow eerily. A voice from beyond the dim light spoke softly. "Your distinctiveness will be added to our collective. You will no longer be alone but one with the Borg."
"Like hell I am" Cam yelled, looking around for where the voice was coming from, "I am Master Sargeant Cameron Bourne, Starfleet Marine Corp, there's no way on Gods green earth I'm becoming a Borg Drone. I'll die before then"
"You will not be given that option," the voice said. "We require your body in order to expand the collective. You will become Borg." The voice may have been female, but it was hard to tell. It seemed amused by his defiance.
In the background could be heard the faint hum of electronic equipment and movement. It wasn't loud enough to be a distraction but seemed to come from everywhere at the same time.
Struggling against the restraints, Cam felt the one on his left arm loosen only a little, but just enough that he could slip his hand out of the restraint. Glancing around, he tried to reach up for the strap across his chest.
Just then the Borg stepped out of the shadows and stood for several moments, analyzing the readings on a nearby monitor. Then it made several adjustments before looking down at Cam. "There is no escape. The nanites have already been injected into your body. The only reason you are restrained so that we can more easily monitor their effect. The end result is irrevocable. You will become one of us." Now the tone of the Borg's voice was impassive, uncaring. It was more concerned with the effectiveness of the nanties than with Cam himself."
Cam gave a stubborn smile, despite his feelins of fear and dread, "are you sure you want me? You may not like what you find up here" he said, reaching up with his left hand and tapping his temple.
"Once you join the Collective, your individuality will cease." The Borg scanned the console again, then looked Cam over. "You are acceptable to the Borg. We will improve upon your weaknesses. Your humanity makes you flawed."
Cam rolled his eyes, "well I'm glad you find me worthy of assimilation. Yay" he said sarcastically, all the while trying to figure a way out of this mess he'd fallen into. After a moment, he started to hear what sounded like thousands of people whispering in the back of his mind, "wha...what's happening?"
"We are Borg. You are now one of us." The voice was now inside his head. A long needle shot out of the Borg's knuckle. It quickly injected Cam with more nanites. It then unstrapped Cam from the table and moved him and the top of the table onto a mobile cart to take him to the processing center. "You should be pleased. The modifications are working to specifications."
Cam was wheeled through a dark tunnel into another room. This one was still filled with dust, but the light was a brighter green with occasional red lights blinking on wall units. Cam was placed on another table. The process was almost complete. There was no longer a need for restraints.
Suddenly finding he was unable to move, despite the straps having been removed, Cam started to fight as hard as he could to block out the voices. I am not Borg, I AM A HUMAN he thought to himself as much as anyone or anything.
"You are one with the Borg. Resistance is futile. You will now serve us." The voice was clear, but behind it could be heard a hundred whispers from a hundred minds.
I.....will.....NOT!! he thought, struggling to ignore the voices, which by now had become an almost defening roar. After a few more moments of mentally struggling, the Borg implants eventually won out.
His body relaxing, Cam turned his head to look at the Borg standing beside him, "we are Borg, Resistance is futile"
"Excellent. The process is complete." The Borg continued to enter data in one of the units beside Cam. Then, finished, it turned to watch the latest member of the collective rise from the table.
After the implants had been fully installed and his arm replaced with a mechanical limb, the new Borg slowly sat up from the table and stood up, "We are Five of Eight, secondary repair drone of Unimatrix 06"
