Mission: The Enemy Within: Lying in Wait
Vance required regeneration, the altercation with the federation vessel "Calypso" had exhausted a great deal of energy, in addition the human Alexandra Vance had not rested in many hours before her assimilation into the collective.
Continue to search for the Federation vessel. It is vital to our mission and must be assimilated.
Vance walked from the control console to the regeneration station designated to her. Vance closed her eyes and began the cycle.
[Home of Jethro and Kimberly Vance, Chicago, Illinois, Earth]
"Alexandra it's nice to have you home." a male voice said.
Vance surveyed the room. Her regeneration cycle had not completed and now she was not on her ship. Furthermore the voices of the collective could not be heard. She pondered how she could have been severed from the hive mind without becoming aware of sabotage.
"Are you okay there space cadet?" the male voice laughed.
Vance turned to the source of the voice. "State your designation."
The man laughed. "Well Alex that's a strange way to say hello."
"This is not my designation. State your designation!" Vance stated once again.
"HEY! You calm down there young lady, remember where you are." the man replied in a stern tone.
"Species 5618, human. Prepare to be assimilated." Vance approached the man and outstretched her arm to his neck placing her knuckles near. However she was unable to assimilate, her implants had been removed, she no longer looked borg.
"What is going on?" she asked.
"I could ask you the same thing dear are you okay?" he asked concernedly.
Alexandra took a moment to study the man before her. It was...her father.
"Dad....?"
"Yes Alexandra?" he looked are her confusedly wondering what had gotten into her.
She immediately hugged him with all the strength she could muster. "Dad I have missed you so much, where is mother?"
"Your mother has gone out for a bit princess, she will be back shortly."
Alexandra laughed softly. "You haven't called me that in years."
"Well no matter what dear you are still my little princess, can i get you a drink dear?" Jethro asked.
"Yes, Tea Earl Grey hot."
"You know i'm not a replicator right?" he joked.
Alexandra chuckled. "I'm sorry dad, years on a starship do that to you."
"How things have changed my dear....but i'm glad to see your love for earl grey tea has not, it is good for you. Did you know when you were a little girl your mother and I used to give you earl grey tea all the time. It helped you sleep at night even the worst nightmares could not keep you up. When you woke up screaming I would go downstairs and brew you a small cup while your mother sang to you, do you remember princess?" he called from the kitchen filling the kettle with water and turning the heat on.
Alexandra smiled as she could hear the sound of her mother's voice. "Yes dad I remember. You two would not sleep until my eyes were closed. I miss our time together." she replied wiping a tear from her eye.
"As do I." Jethro replied softly bringing Alexandra her cup of tea and setting it on the coffee table in front of her. "Speaking of which how is life in the stars treating you?"
"Well you know dad.....it's one of those things." she replied playfully.
"Of yes of course Alexandra, we wouldn't want to break the prime directive."
Alexandra giggled. "Dad that's not the right one."
"You know what I mean!" he replied taking a sip from his tea.
"Enough about me dad, tell me how you have been."
"Well Alex things have slowed down quite a bit since your mother and I retired. We've really taken the time to reconnect and spend time with one another, you know it's important to spend time with family."
For some odd reason the comment did not sit well with Alexandra. She took a sip from her tea and continued to listen.
"Now we want to travel, nothing extravagant like you but perhaps Italy. Although I have been trying to convince your mother to take a trip to Risa Three, I hear the beaches are magnificent. Have you ever seen them?" he inquired.
"No." Alexandra replied shaking her head. "Unfortunately my assignments never seemed to cross paths with Risa, I have had to make due with the holodecks instead." she replied with a slight sigh.
"That's too bad. It seems that even though you are free to roam the galaxy, you are inhibited from seeing all of it's beauty. It is a shame Alex, you really did enjoy the outdoors."
"I still do....there have just been other things going on that is all." she replied suddenly feeling the need to shelter herself from her father, as if he was posing a threat to her.
"Princess, I know you a loyal to Starfleet and your duty but you must take the time to get away from it all and reconnect with yourself. I don't want to pry to deep but Alex I'm worried. I can see you are tense and not the cheerful girl I once knew. Have you considered taking some extended time off? To get to know who you are, or were again?"
"Dad, I assure you I know exactly who I am and besides my age and physical appearance nothing has changed since I left." she said reassuring her worried parent.
"And who are you Alexandra?" he asked.
You are Borg.Came a familiar voice.
Alexandra shook her head as if to shake the voice from her mind. "I am....."
You are Borg, You are the voice of one. The voice said once again.
"Alexandra? Have you forgotten?" her dad asked beginning to break into tears.
"No daddy, I haven't....I am..."
You are Borg The voice repeated once again. Soon the voices that had been absent for the conversation with her father had returned, she could sense the collective once again.
"Alex?!" her dad said trembling unable to hold his cup of tea anymore.
Alexandra stood up. "My name is Alexandra Kimberly Vance, Executive Officer of the USS Calypso. I am your daughter, your little princess and I always will be. I am human!"
Jethro wiped the tears from his eyes. "Then why are you still here?"
[Borg Rhombus]
Vance's regeneration cycle had completed. The visions of her past were now replaced with the voice of the collective. Vance scanned her surroundings, data showed Vance was on the correct vessel. She stepped down from the regeneration station returning moments later to the control console.
I am the Borg
