Mission:
The Enemy Within: Lying in Wait
Location: Tiberious IV
ON
Cam was walking along the edge of the lake, keeping an eye out for any more of those strange lights, or anything else that might pose a threat to his group. He wasn't too happy with Lieutenant Lancaster at the moment because of her reckless actions towards the light they managed to capture, but he wasn't going to hold it against her. he figured it was just scientific curiosity on her part.
As he walked, he spotted something on the other side of the lake. flipping down his helmets visor, he tapped his combadge, "Sergeant Bourne to Lieutenant Lancaster, meet me at my position"
Ronnie had finished organizing her notes on the "ghost" and her report thta she'd file as soon as she was able to get in contact with the ship. She was organizing their supplies and keeping a covert eye on Damion when Cam called her. "On my way."
She grabbed her tricorder and her pack and headed after Cam. "What is it?" she asked.
Pointing over to the other side of the lake, Cam flicked on the light on his helmet, "do you see that opening?" he asked, unsure if his visor was working properly.
"I do." Ronnie pulled out her tricorder and scanned it. "The opening goes back a ways and goes under the sand. I can't track where it goes from there." She looked over at him, one eyebrow raised. " Should we gather a team and go look?"
Cam nodded, "that sounds like an idea. Pick a small team and I'll meet you at the entrance"
Ronnie quickly gathered a group and returned. "Okay, let's see what we have over there."
"Ok, everyone in a tight group behind me with phasers ready. We don't know what's down there so I want all of you on your toes. Call out if you see anything" Cam ordered,
Wilhelm fell in with the group strapping on his helmet and reactivating his phaser rifle.
Ronnie nodded to the Colonel and turned to Cam. "Okay, let's go."
Nodding to Ronnie, Cam leveled his rifle and started to walk into the opening.
The tunnel snaked around and down. As they neared the place where the tunnel went under the sand sea, the air became thick with particulates. Silicates and fine bits of sand made breathing difficult.
coughing slightly, Cam held up his hand to indicate for the group to stop, "it's getting pretty thick down here. Marines, Breathers on" he ordered, unslinging his backpack and pulling out a re-breather attachment for his helmet. As soon as it was clipped into place, Cam turned to the Starfleet personal with him, "do any of you carry HAZMAT gear?" he asked, looking at Ronnie
"I seem to have misplaced mine." Marek said, from the back of the group, half jokingly but didn't smile.
"Alright, those of you with any medical training keep an eye on each other for any effects this, soup, may have" Cam said, flipping down his helmets Visor, "let's move"
Ronnie chose to use the old-fashioned method. She pulled out a bandanna, dampened it with water from her canteen and then tied it around her nose and mouth. It wasn't the same as a rebreather, but it filtered out most of the particulates.
As they continued further down, the air became so thick with particles that even the rebreathers were having trouble processing it. "I don't think we can go any further Lieutenant" Cam said, tapping the side of his helmet, "I recommend we return to camp and...." Suddenly, Cam disappeared from sight
"Master Sergeant!" Ronnie called. She fought the urge to run up to where he was as she didn't know why he disappeared. As far as she knew, he could have fallen off a cliff or broken through a thin layer or rock.
Wilhelm looked down the drop off "You still alive down there Marine?" He noticed his voice didn't echo so it couldn't have been that far down even through this soup of an atmosphere.
"I'm fine!!" Cam called from somewhere below them, "I seem to have dropped into a cavern of some sort below the dust. It's about a three meter jump, so be carefull coming down!!"
Ronnie was relieved that he was uninjured. But now her curiosity was piqued. "What's down there?" she asked.
"A Christmas Feast" Cam said sarcastically, "How the hell am i supposed to know, it's pitch black down here"
"I thought your HUD could see in the dark," Ronnie replied. "I'd toss you down a light, but I doubt you'd catch it. Can I throw you a rpoe?"
"How about you tie the rope to the light and lower it down" Cam suggested
Ronnie did so, hoping the Marine would be able to find it in the sandy air. With his fall, even more particulates danced in the air than before, making it nearly impossible to see. She had no idea what sort of visibility Cam would have.
As the light slowly made it's way down from the ceiling, it slowly but surely eliminated the large area he'd fallen into. Taking a look around, Cam could see a lot easier than before. "Lieutenant, if you can, find something to secure the rope to and come down here. There's something you need to see"
Wilhelm looked behind them and seen a solid rock outcrop that would serve well. Taking the rope from Ronnie he looped it around a couple of times and tied it off "There you go Lieutenant."
Just then a group of Marines and Starfleet officers came down the tunnel. "Ambassador Annhwi sent us to see if you need help. We've secured the upper caves. She thought you might need help if you ran into any Borg."
"Well we'll take you." Wilhelm said with a smile, "Fall in."
Kara nodded, happy to be back with the rest of the Marines.
After the group had made their way down, they found Cam on the floor with his back resting on a wall, "Ok, who's got the med kit?" he asked
A medic hurried over to check on Cam.
Kara stood behind them and shook her head. "Here I come after killing Borg spiders and what do I find? You, lounging around," she teased Cam.
Cam smiled, "you work too hard, you should relax a little now and than. Also having a broken leg helps"
"If I hang round you more often I just might." She grinned as she watched the medic set Cam's leg and repair the bone. It was a very good thing they had the proper equipment to heal bone. "Just don't try leaping tall buildings any time soon."
The medic snorted as he tried not to smile at the comment. "There. All set, " he said a few minutes later.
Ronnie and Maria looked around the cavern. "What did you want us to...oh."
Ronnie couldn't believe what she saw. The cavern seemed to be man made. It went under the sand and seemed to be some sort of prepping place, but for what she wasn't sure. "I've got a bad feeling about this."
She pulled out her tricorder and began to scan. "It's Borg," she stated. "And I think they know we're here."
