Samantha called the new mission advisor to her ready room to have a talk with him.
She still had no idea why Starfleet felt it necessary for her to even have a mission advisor for a simple exploration mission. But since meeting him, she was beginning to have concerns about the reason he might really be here.
Michael stepped off the turbo lift and onto the bridge. He looked around the bridge taking in what everyone was doing before stepping over to the ready room door. He chimed it and waited. This was to be expected and he was ready for it.
"Come in," Sam said. She moved around the desk to greet the officer. "Hello, Commander Sears, have a seat."
Michael nodded as he walked into the ready room and headed for the chair after she offered him a seat. He sat down and leaned back. "What can I do for you Captain?"
Sam didn't feel like beating around the bush -- and she didn't think he'd expect her to sugar-coat things, so she came right out with it. "Why are you here? Starfleet is not in the habit of sending mission advisors on routine exploration missions. Even with the map, there's nothing to warrant your being here."
Michael looked across the desk at the Captain. "I am here because Starfleet Intelligence wants me here." He took a deep breath and got up from the seat heading to the window. "Starfleet Intelligence has received information that a man by the name of Kilgore is following the same map as you are Captain."
'Kilgore?"
Michael nodded. "Yes, Kilgore..." He turned around walking back to his seat and sat back down. "The place from where you purchased the map as you already have been made aware was trashed and the merchant was injured in the attack on his shop. Starfleet Intelligence has reason to believe that he is behind the attack."
"On what evidence?" Sam said, sitting behind her desk. She'd heard vague comments about a former Starfleet officer turned rogue, but until now they were just snippets of rumor.
"I am unable to disclose that information to you Captain -- however it is my job here to keep an eye out for this man." Michael responded.
"I need a bit more than your word, Commander."
"I understand that Captain, but for the moment being I have given you as much as I am allowed to disclose." Commander Sears responded. "Just like you Captain, I have my own orders I must follow."
She didn't like how he failed to really answer her questions. And he was blocking his thoughts from her, which also made her wary. "Understood, Commander. As long as your orders don't compromise my ship or my crew." She stood, signaling the end of their discussion. "It has been most ... enlightening. If there's nothing else, you're dismissed."
