Mission:
Shades of Gray
Location: Brig Cell 4
Stran sat, in a meditative pose, in Brig Cell 4. Strangely, he seemed unaware of Daniels' presence.
"I remember, the first time Tramira was here, in Security." Daniels said, with a chuckle. "She had brought out Jaxara's insurance box. Four of our coworkers-"
"Were placed in this very cell." Stran said, calmly, with a nod.
"There was the nutjob lady, who attacked the ambassador... Wind chime?" Daniels asked
"Winchester." Stran clarified. "Alexandra Winchester. As well as your previous social connection, Lieutenant Junior Grade Lyre, as well as two ensigns."
"That's the Kyt I like to remember. Firm religious belief. Proud. A bit undisciplined, but still understanding base right and wrong." Daniels said, staring at Stran.
"You believe she does not, now?" Stran asked.
"Her religious beliefs are gone. Something she said Jaxara told her once. About Religious beliefs causing too many wars, or something like that." Daniels said, with a shrug.
"Why are you angry with her?" Stran asked.
"She broke a promise. To the Captain." Daniels said.
"Did she?" Stran asked.
"After Mythraeli. Not all that long ago. She promised the Captain she wasn't about to begin taking on her predecessor's traits." Daniels said. "Or habits."
"Lieutenant Jaxara did not die a dishonorable death. He did his duty, and found his Captain." Stran said.
"That's what the official reports say." Daniels said, watching the Vulcan carefully. "You are hiding something, points."
"Many things, Ensign Daniels. Including the desire to render you unconscious so that I can rest, and meditate properly." Stran countered.
"Remember the stories about how she got O'Conner to be helpful, on that Mythraeli mission?" Daniels asked.
"They were not stories. I saw them, in her mind. She honestly believed that uppercutting Lieutenant O'Conner was the only way to keep him motivated." Stran said, with a raised eyebrow.
"How about the time she-"
"DANIELS." Stran said, loudly enough, to disturb the brig officer from his nap. "I am trying to not focus on Tramira Kyt. It is not working, with you constantly discussing her."
After several minutes of silence, Stran quirked a corner of his mouth up.
"Yo, ho, scurvy dogs! Can't go pirating without rum!" He said, in an attempted imitation of Kyt's voice.
"That's EXACTLY what I had running through my head, when Levue arrested me. Ridiculous, isn't it?" Daniels asked.
"Perhaps." Stran said, with a quirked eyebrow. "It is interesting, to note, some similarities, that seem to run, among the three Security Chiefs I have observed. Jaxara, Kyt, Levue."
Daniels quirked an eyebrow. "Dare I ask?"
"Not one of them, especially seemed to think you would make a capable assistant Chief of Security, and yet, the Security department, over the past week, especially, has largely been held up, and running, by your efforts." Stran stated. "I believe Lieutenant Junior Grade Levue is in error."
Daniels looked at stran, with a curious look. "Kyt didn't trust me?" Daniels asked.
Stran shook his head. "She contemplated reevaluating you as Assistant Chief quite a few times. The one time she actually mentioned doing so, to Captain York, before we came to Micnar VII, Captain York talked her out of it."
"Captain York?" Daniels asked, slightly dumbfounded.
"It is intriguing, sometimes, what you learn, from the eyes of another." Stran said, thoughtfully.
Daniels chuckled. "It's a shame, you know. I spent too much time on work." Daniels said.
Stran quirked an eyebrow. "To the contrary. Knowing you, as I do, had you not dedicated yourself to your duties, as steadily, and harshly, as you have, you likely would have ended up in the brig sooner." Stran said. "Or, perhaps, are you referencing a specific short coming, in your-"
"Quit profiling me, Stran. You know it pisses me off." Daniels said, looking out the force-field. It seemed calm, in the security area. Perhaps, for the first time in a while. A long while. Since before Kyt. Since before Jaxara. Maybe the new lady wasn't such a bad idea after all. She'd certainly gotten a few people spooked out of some of their extra-regulation habits.
"I do not require to do so. I have seen you with Kyt's eyes. I know it to be true." Stran said. "And, likewise, I know of your specific short coming. Perhaps, you will find more time for an attempted romantic life, in your future."
"Yeah, sure, with some big fat guy, in a Federation Penal colony, named Bubba." Daniels muttered. "I still can't believe Donovan sold me out."
"She is doing her job, Daniels. Whether she sees it, or not, whether Levue sees it, or not, So were you. There are two things to remember." Stran said, as his escort to Sickbay returned to the Security screen.
"And that is?" Daniels asked.
"You did your duty, to the best of your ability, and Captain York knows it." Stran said.
Daniels chuckled, as Stran walked out of the field. "That's not going to help, points. She's pressing charges."
Stran nodded. "Yes. She, the Chief Security and Tactical Officer, is pressing charges, which will result in the Captain reviewing the case, and deciding an appropriate punishment, or, if necessary, elevation to a higher court." Stran said. "Do not sell your future short, yet."
The Escort chuckled. "Keep telling yourselves that." He said. "Hop along, little bunny. We have to take you to the Vet."
Stran shook his head, at the crude joke about his ears, and left Daniels, alone, in Brig Cell 4.
"Come back in here, and say that again, you crude little son of a denebian slime devil!" Daniels yelled after Stran's escort. "You are just mad because you'll never get promoted above Ensign!"
"Neither will you!" The escort retorted, whistling softly off key, as he escorted Stran down the hallway, towards sickbay.
