Shades of Gray

Ronnie had yet to meet the new Chief Intelligence Officer. As he was new on board, she thought she'd stop by and share what little she'd uncovered so far.
She asked the computer for his located and headed out. With a brisk push, she rang the door chime and waited.
"Enter" She heard him yell slightly as he leaned back in his chair and sighed, wishing the interview with Lumina had gone better. His partnership with his new assistant had begun rather rocky as he took a sip of his coffee and looked back at the notebook Lumina had handed to them. He tossed it back onto the desk and then took another sip.
Ronnie walked into the room and took a quick look around before smiling at the officer seated at the desk. "Hi. I'm Ronnie Lancaster. Welcome to the Calypso."
"Thank you, Please have a seat." He gestured to the chair ahead of him. Behind him, above his head on the wall, was a rack of weapons. His office almost seemed like it was most of a security office. A Bat'leth with the points facing down, one of his Retractable swords unfolded and facing downward handing from the bottom, and lastly an Ushann-tor with the bladed end facing upward. Each weapon played a significant part in his life. "What can I do for you, Lieutenant.?"
"I've been working with Lieutenant Wexler in Engineering to research the technology and advancements on Michnar VII. I thought you'd like to know what we've found so far." She slid a PADD across his desk. "To get you up to speed."
He smiled at her as he picked up the PaDD and looked at the information on it. "Would you like something, Lieutenant Lancaster? The replicator is on the wall over there. I think it needs a better recipe for the coffee though." Damion laughed slightly as he leaned back a bit. "Cell phones? Gas powered? This is starting to look very closely to 20th century Earth, isn't it?"
Ronnie walked over to the replicator and got herself a glass of tomato juice and sat across from Damion. "In some places, yes. In others, they use steam. Or solar power. A few places have Romulan or Federation technology. It's a Hodge Podge. Like they scavenge whatever they can get." She shrugged. "I've found similar signs with crop rotations. Some areas use plows. Some tractors. Some modern technology. It's quite fascinating."
"Romulans wouldn't just let them take technology?" He said as he looked over to her taking a slight second to look into her eyes and read off slight surface thoughts. "Make you wonder how they came on these kind of technologies. Do they have warp technology? Space flight?" Damion took a sip of the coffee he had on his desk. It wasn't really good, like he pointed out earlier, but he did have worse.
Ronnie met his gaze with a frank one of her own. "No. Romulans don't share. The large cities are warp capable, but they don't do much with it. I'd like to find out how they acquired it. Would be nice to see an underdeveloped planet steal something from the Romulans."
"Captain Mangalia was kind enough to grant me access to the probes." He took out a PaDD and hit a button as it brought up the overview of the cities and a description of their advances, compared to one another. "Have a look, Lieutenant." He slid it over to her. "Those were all my observations. I haven't hit the surface yet, but maybe that will help with some of your information." Damion smiled at her and then took another sip of his coffee.
Ronnie thumbed through the PADD. "Interesting. I haven't been to the surface yet, either. I've analyzed the drought patterns and geographic conditions on the planet. It seems they way they've setup their reactors they're actually causing more harm than good. I'm not sure how to tell them they need to organize and work together on crop rotations." She looked at Damion and grilled. "Sorry."
"No, please continue." He smiled as he leaned back, grabbing his cup of coffee and nodded. "I am Chief Of Intelligence. By all means. Inform me. It's part of the job you know." Damion laughed slightly as he took a sip.
"You may regret it," she warned him. Her ominous tone was belied by the twinkle in her eye.
Ronnie turned the console so that both of them could see it and began to explain how weather patterns, rainfall and crop failures. Then she added cities and how they altered the patterns.
When she was finished with the explanation she would look and see he was still awake. "Good to see we have someone who wont miss a beat." He smiled as he took another sip and then put his coffee down. "Any word on the team on the surface? How is there condition?" He said with a curious look, grabbing another PaDD and looking it over.
"The original group is back. They treated a large number of people for a viral outbreak -- until a riot broke out. From what I understand, they gave the anti-virus to the local medical facilities to disburse. Commander Raine took another group ddown to the planet today. I don't know their status." She'd only noticed the second group because she was looking to see if any new technology samples had come aboard without her knowledge. "If you find out anything, could you let me know? I'm trying to put together as complete a picture as I can."
"I give you my word, Lieutenant. I hope to speak to you again." Damion smiled as he finished up his coffee and picked up another PaDD. This was going to be an interesting ship. Maybe it showed promise after all.
"I'll hold you to that promise," she said, returning his smile. "See you around, Lieutenant." She returned her cup to the replicator and headed for the door. She paused and faced the Lieutenant. "Let me know if you need anything further."
"I will." Damion smiled as he nodded as he went back to looking at the information on the PaDD. He liked her. She seemed like someone nice and who would be helpful in the future.
