Samantha tried to sleep, but she couldn't relax. Too much was on her mind and she was worried about the away team. Neither did she want to toss and turn, as she didn't want to wake Damon. He had enough troubles of his own now that he was no longer in the Starfleet Marine Corps.
She turned on her side and watched him sleep for a while, a soft smile playing across her mouth. He was the best thing that ever happened to her and she was constantly amazed that he chose to be with her. She leaned forward and kissed him gently on the shoulder, careful not to wake him. Then, equally gently, she slipped out of the bed and put on her robe.
Sam padded to the replicator and made herself a cup of sweet chamomile tea. Maybe that would help her relax enough to get back to sleep. Cup in hand, she sat at her desk and began to scan through her messages. There weren't very many as she'd checked them earlier that night, but it was something to do. As she worked, an idea began to form in her mind. Maybe, just maybe, she could see if it were even possible for Damon to move to Starfleet and become her XO?
"Computer, I'd like to send a confidential message to Admiral Kathryn Burke, Theta Fleet Headquarters, Starbase Typhon."
When the computer beeped its readiness, she began. "Admiral Burke, I have a rather unusual request. More a favor, actually. As you are probably aware, Lieutenant Colonel Damon Raine recently resigned his commission to remain on the Calypso with me. Would it be possible for him to switch to Starfleet and take the position of my XO recently vacated by Commander Karma Sinclair? I know this is a highly irregular request, but I also know that Commander Harmos Aurelius of the USS Endeavor recently went from Marine CO to XO."
Sam paused to sip her tea and think for a moment. "Admiral, Damon has been by my side for almost a year and a half now. You've read the mission reports. There is no one I trust more than he. I believe he proved himself more than adequate to the task on Turkana IV. I've asked him to be temporary XO, but he hasn't agreed to this being a permanent position. So I can't officially request his transfer. However, can you let me know if it's even a possibility, and if it is, start the paperwork? So that if he does accept it won't take a lot of red tape to make the switch? Damon doesn't know that I'm asking you for this favor, so please keep this between the two of us for now. Thank you."
She ended the transmission and sat for several minutes, sipping her tea. Had she done the right thing? Would Damon agree to be her XO? Would he get upset with her for starting the process? It could always be stopped. Easier to stop a transfer that make one happen. Still, she was taking a risk.
She finished her tea and put the cup back in the replicator. She was taking a big risk no matter what she did. She wanted marriage and a family -- two things that Damon said time and time again weren't for him. But even with the odds stacked against her, she couldn't walk away. Damon completed her. He made her a better person than she was alone and she wanted to be with him.
Her thoughts didn't help. Now instead of worrying about the away team, she was worrying about Damon. With a sigh she climbed back into bed and cuddled up to Damon, resigned to a few more hours of sleeplessness.
