A Time to Plant...

Lizzie walked into the arboretum, looking for the Chief Science Officer. She’d just come aboard and unpacked and now wanted to check in with her new Chief.

She walked into the arboretum and stopped. A group of people dressed in jeans and t-shirts was in the process of planting trees. On the deck above, others were planting flowers. It looked like she’s come aboard just in time.

She walked to a nearby Bajoran. “Hi. I’m looking for Lieutenant York?â€

The man looked up, then pointed to a woman in a pair of black jeans and a black tank top. “That’s Sam.â€

Sam? She thought, looking at the woman. She thanked the man and walked over to the woman in black. “Are you Lieutenant York?†she asked.

Sam was packing dirt around a tree that had just been planted. She looked up at the blonde. “I’m Sam York. How can I help you?â€

“I’m Elizabeth Jackson. Botanist.â€

Sam stood up, brushed off her hand, then extended it to Lizzie. “Welcome aboard! I’m glad you’re here. As you can see, we’re in the middle of planting the arboretum. I’d like to get everything done today or tomorrow so the plants have a few days to settle in before we launch. The designs are over there.†Sam pointed to a large sheet of paper on the wall. “Have a look and if you want to make any changes, let me know.†Sam went back to the tree and Lizzie walked over to the wall and began to study the layout of the arboretum.

She noted the flowers on the top floor and trees on the bottom, the fountain in the center with a bench around it, a waterfall and a stream. It looked pretty good. The layout of the various plants worked, too. A nice variety scattered around so it didn’t look like there was an area of one type of plant, then an area of another, but the trees and flowers were usually grouped in three to five to help with cross-pollination.

Fern was used around the walls to help with underbrush and to block the walls. It looked like several holoemitters had been added, too. She wondered what would be displayed on three spots on the walls. She’d have to ask about those. They could be interesting.

When she was done, Lizzie walked back to Sam. “It looks good to me. What do you plan on doing with the holoprojectors?â€

Sam finished the tree and stood. “One will be a castle on a hill, one an ancient ruin and the third will be mountains.â€

“Nice. It’ll make the arboretum look larger and add a feel of being on a planet. I like it,†Lizzie said. â€So, what do you want me to do?â€

“Can you supervise the flowers? I’m good down here, but I’d like someone to supervise the planting up there.â€

Lizzie nodded and headed for the spiral staircase in one corner.
