Mission:
The Forests of Mythraeli
Location: Science offices
It was nearing the end of Talri's shift when she realized her error. In her desire to see the stellar cartography section, to begin work, she had neglected what she knew to be proper courtesy aboard Starfleet ships. She had not been to greet the person responsible for the science department.
Deciding to remedy the situation immediately, Talri left stellar cartography and made her way towards the main offices, hoping to see someone she could talk to.
Ronnie was still trying to get used to the change in status. Even though it was temporary, it was still odd. When she saw the Vulcan walk into the main science lab she nodded. "Hi. Are you looking for something or someone?"
'Indeed,' responded Talri. 'I am looking for the person responsible for this department. Would you be able to assist me to locate them?'
"I think at the moment that would be me," Ronnie said with a rueful grin. "Ronnie Lancaster. How may I help you?"
'My name is Talri,' she replied. 'I am here to work in stellar cartography. That is, I have been working in stellar cartography today. I thought it appropriate to introduce myself to my colleagues. I am pleased to meet you, Lieutenant Lancaster.'
"Oh, yes. I read something about you coming on board," Ronnie said. "Welcome. Is there anything I can do to help you?"
Talri thought for a moment. 'Yes,' she said then. 'It would be useful to me to have a list of all scheduled departmental meetings, so that I may enter them into my own calendar.'
"The first Monday of every month. We have a meeting at 0730. Each shift has a meeting on the third Monday in the first hour of the shift. If there's something mission-related, we meet once a week," Ronnie told her.
Talri nodded. 'That seems reasonable,' she said, and then, upon reflection, 'What else do you think I ought to know? You will have to forgive me. This is my first starship assignment.'
"The CO is the former chief science officer. She set up a secondary computer database for science. It runs off its own power. So we aren't dependent on ship's power to keep experiments going. The good thing is if the ship needs to reallocate power, our experiments don't go boom."
'Having our own power supply will, no doubt, prove invaluable,' said Talri carefully. 'However, I do not believe there is anything in stellar cartography with a tendency to explode, regardless of power allocation.'
"In stellar cartography, no. The particle lab... yes," Ronnie said. "It's just easier to have the entire department on one database. We keep everything backed up on both drives. Even though a starship computer almost never goes down, we do lose power and science isn't a critical department when it coems to ship functionality. For stellar cartography, think of it as a way to back up sensitive data that can be secured at a moment's notice."
'That sounds reasonable,' Talri agreed. 'I should not like to lose data due to power issues.' She was silent a moment, considering, and then remarked: 'You said that this is your department at the moment. Are you expecting to soon go elsewhere?'
"To be honest, I don't know. I was Assistant Chief, but the CO switched me and the Chief because he kept missing meetings and dropping assignments. He's been busy with other stuff, apparently." Ronnie shrugged. "I'm here until she finds someone better."
'I understand,' said Talri, not entirely certain that she did, but not wishing to ask her to elaborate further. 'I can assure you that my work here will be efficient and diligent, just as it was at the Institute.'
"You'll be great," Ronnie assured her. "If there's anything you need from me -- or Lieutenant O'Connor, just let us know."
Talri nodded. 'Thank you,' she said. 'It will be good to work with you. In turn, if there is anything you require from stellar cartography, be certain to inform me.'
"I will. Thanks," Ronnie said. "I'm sure I'll take you up on that before too long. Oh, and welcome to the Calypso."
