Sam made herself a cup of carrot tea and stood at her viewport, looking at the planet below and sipping her tea quietly. It had been a long few days and she was glad to be leaving Turkana IV early the next morning. She was just waiting for the last of her crew to beam aboard later that day. She also had to prepare a report for a final exchange of information.
Sam set her cup down on a side table and rubbed her forehead. Things hadn't gone as she'd hoped. Peace on Turkana IV was iffy. One of the three faction leaders was under arrest and the other two were ready to start another global war at the first sign of... well, anything.
Not only that, one of her crew was dead, one was in the brig and three were to be shipped to a hospital ship as soon as they left the sector. It was unlikely any would return. Fortunately, Starfleet had sent her a new Chief Engineer just after Shalie took ill.
As she thought about the three she groaned. That left her without yet another XO. Damon was covering brilliantly, but he was a Marine. And, as he frequently reminded her, once a Marine, always a Marine.
Too bad she couldn't convince him to 'switch sides.' There was no one on the ship she trusted as much as Damon -- with anything. The thought made her smile. She'd also never loved anyone as much as she loved Damon. He made everything seem all right. Even writing letters to Lorne Jaxara's family.
That reminded her, she needed to send in commendations for both Damon and Delon for the way they handled the situation while she'd been... absent. She didn't want to spend time thinking about the day she'd been imprisoned. Her luck, however, was holding out. Somehow, she always managed to get herself in trouble. And Damon always managed to get her out of it. That made her chuckle. The poor man really did have more to do than pull her out of sticky situations -- but she was very glad he was there anyway.
She finished her carrot tea and took the cup back to the replicator for recycling, a smile on her face. Tonight was Christmas Eve and she had something very special planned for Damon.
Her "break" over, Sam went to her desk and began filling out a report.
