ON
Sam had just left the Chief of Security's office and was on her way back to her own when she approached an Ensign in the corridor.
"Hello," she said.
Tharek quickly turned around, only to gaze upon a long haired human clad in blue. "Hello, what can I do for you Lieutenant?"
"Nothing. I'm just passing through and wanted to say hi," Sam replied.
"Fair enough, care to walk with me? Or are you scared to walk with a Cardassian like everyone else?" Tharek asked quizzically, half seriously, half jokingly.
Sam chuckled. "I know a few people who would as soon shoot you as look at you, but I'm not among them. If Starfleet thinks you're good enough to be a member of this crew, then who am I to argue?"
"Good analogy." Tharek proclaimed. "So, where you headed?"
"Back to the science department," she replied. "I'm Samantha York, by the way."
"Tharek Getal, Investigations Officer." He said, sounding slightly impressed by his own title.
"I will remember that, Tharek Getal, when I need something investigated," she replied with a smile. "It sounds like a very good job to have." Sam liked solving puzzles and finding answers. It was an important part of history and archaeology. Tharek did something similar to that in investigating crime.
"Very good if you Cardassian." He replied bluntly. "I'm a Cardassian, we are good at interrogations and finding out what we want."
"So I've heard," Sam replied, equally bluntly.
Tharek smirked and gave a polite chuckle. "Most people have heard." He then looked around him, then directed his eyes back at Sam. "Y'know, I think I haven't felt this comfortable around a Human before... No one's trying to shoot or stab me. It's nice."
"That's a pretty sad commentary on your life, then," Sam said with a chuckle. "That a casual conversation with a human is out of the ordinary." She shook her head. "In my line of work I've dealt with people from most species. I don't judge everyone by the actions of a few. Or even many." She'd worked with some very nice Romulans and Cardassians before on her various digs. Maybe it was because they had a shared interest, or maybe it was because they were all scientists and looked beyond the other person's species.
"That's pretty deep. I suppose it is rather sad that I still hold onto the superstitions of old." Tharek said, beggining to chuckle to himself.
"I think that puts you squarely in the majority, which is a sad commentary on society as a whole," Sam chuckled. "But then, I'm a bit of a rebel, so I don't fit into too many stereotypes."
"That's awkward." Tharek said bluntly. "You seek to stand out, whilst I seek to blend in."
"I don't seek to stand out. I do what I feel is right. Sometimes it means I go against traditional views. Sometimes it means I cause trouble." Sam shrugged. "I do not have the extra burden of my culture weighing down on me. That makes it harder. But I have chosen to live true to myself and not worry about how others perceive me. For the most part." There were always one or two people she didn't want to offend or alienate.
"Again, I suppose you're right." Tharek spoke softly. "This is my stop. I guess I'll see you later Lieutenant." He spoke in a tone that could melt chocolate.
Sam watched him go for a moment, wondering what type of a person Tharek Getal was. She shook her head and continued on her way.
