Ensign Elizabeth Jackson was concerned about her birds. They were usually well behaved and well trained, but there was always that one chance, and she didn't want to cause any problems.

So, she decided to talk to Engineering and see if there was something that could be done.

When she walked in, she noticed an Ensign standing by one of the computers. "Excuse me," she said. "Can you help me?"

Rucinter looked distracted at Ensign Jackson, while his hands were still typing at the console, and almost reflexive said maybe a too long "Yees?". In the next fraction of the second, understanding that maybe his is being rude, he stopped typing at the console, turn to Ensign Jackson and said, smiling: "Oh, sorry... How can I help you?"

'I'm Lizzie Jackson. I run the arboretum," she said by way of introduction.

"Nice meeting you, Lizzie, I'm Glen" said Rucinter, while the two shook hands.

"I have some birds that live with me and I'm concerned about them flying out and getting lost. Is there any way to set up a field of some kind that will keep the birds in without keeping humanoids out?" She knew it was not very likely, but it was always worth asking.

"Err, a force filed is a force field for both humanoids and birds, but we can deploy an emitter in the arboretum that would temper with birds natural magnetic field detection, forcing them not to leave the designated perimeter. I think that would be less stressful for them... better guiding them using magnetic field than letting the birds hit the forcefield... Let me know what species are you talking about and I can program an emitter to specific frequencies and have it deployed for testing tomorrow before lunch, if it's ok with you?" Rucinter said after a brief thinking time.

"I have two Macaws and a Capuchin monkey," Lizzie said. "I am concerned that the magnetic field could cause problems with their navigation and flight."

"Don't worry about the Macaws, I'll use a gradient intensity field towards, with increasing intensity towards exit, it will only interfere with their navigational system if they approach the exit area. The monkey is not that sensitive to magnetic field, though... You could implant a shield harmonics modulator into her arm, and program a force field to allow any living creature except the one wearing the modulator... Yeah, this could work..."

Lizzie nodded. "I'm willing to give it a try. Until they're trained to stay away from the door, at least."

"Great, so I'll start programming the emitter and the modulator and will have them deployed tomorrow morning, at 0900 hours?"

"I'll be there," Lizzie said. "Thank you."

"Uhm, wait. Do you have plans for tonight? I though maybe we could have a drink in Ten Forward, and you update me about the ship? You know, this is my first day aboard Orion." Rucinter says, almost blushing.

Lizzie was surprised by the invitation. She paused for a moment. "I'm not doing anything tonight. I could meet you there at 2000."

"Alright, see you there, then" Rucinter smile and nodded. While Lizzie turned and walk away and walk down the corridor, he turn to his console, resuming his work, while continue to smile.
