Even Medical can only do so much...

480 words; about a 2 minute read
Mission:
Peace, or Something Like It
Location: Sickbay
Tramira Kyt entered Lieutenant Jaxara's room. He scowled, as he looked at her.
"Here to make fun of me?" Jaxara asked.
Tramira shook her head. "Lyre said you weren't going to make it. I am here to give you the Prophet's blessing, and wish you a peaceful departure."
Jaxara nodded. "Yeah, there is only so much medical can do when your brain, heart, and lungs are the only relatively intact organs you have left. The rest of it is crushed, quite beyond regeneration time. I'm just waiting for the Doc to shut off the life support machines, at this point."
He reached up, and winced, but managed to reach the two pips on his collar. He removed them, and handed them to Kyt, and nodded to a PADD on the counter.
"You bring those to the Captain. Hopefully, she'll read my recommendation and agree with it. You have done good work, for the most part, under Major Raine. There are also a few of my mistakes listed that I insist you repair for me." Jaxara said with a nod.
She nodded. "I understand, I think."
Jaxara shook his head, and nodded to the Lieutenant Pips. "Wear them with honor, Tramira Kyt. They deserve a great deal more than I have shown them. You promise me this, Kyt."
"It goes without saying." She said, shaking her head.
"No, it does not. If it went without saying, the Security Department would not be needed at all." Jaxara said.
Kyt shook her head once more. "Then what would people like you, or I do?"
Jaxara coughed, then shook his head. "We are not alike, Tramira Kyt. You have a set of morals, and ethics. I have read your files. Despite being wrongly imprisoned for half a decade, you still wear that uniform. And you do so with as much pride as you can concoct. I would not have been capable, and truthfully, would not likely have been wrongly imprisoned. I know I would have deserved it."
Kyt nodded. "Go with the prophets, Lorne Jaxara. Go with them, and be at peace. Even if it is not of your beliefs."
Jaxara laughed, then coughed, then laughed, then coughed. "I don't have beliefs anymore, Kyt. That's the other difference. I have seen too many people do too many bad things in the name of a prophet, god, or other deity."
Kyt laughed. "That is nothing to hold against the prophets, themselves."
Jaxara nodded, and coughed. "You had best go. The Doctor said they'd be back shortly."
Kyt nodded. "I hope you find your peace, Lorne Jaxara. In whatever Afterlife the prophets bless you with."
And she left the room, and Jaxara.
Jaxara sat, in the room, listening to the sound of the monitor. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. He breathed unsteadily, and closed his eyes.
Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep.
