The next item on Samantha's agenda was to find out what was going on with her XO. She walked into sickbay and addressed the nurse on duty. "Is Doctor Bowen available? I'd like an update on Commander Sinclair' s condition."
Nurse Jaynes was shocked to see that the Captain was back. She kept a straight face as she nodded. "She is in her office, ma'am."
"Thank you," Sam said with a nod. She felt the shock, but took no notice.
Sam rang the chime on the doctor's door and waited to be admitted.
"Come in," Leanne said in a lousy voice, hoping that it wasn't Jason again as she is not in the mood for being pestered.
"Hi. How is Commander Sinclair doing?"
Just as she heard that it was the Captain's voice, she stood up immediately as her face changed from feeling down to being very surprised. "Captain! Hi. I didn't know they have found you. You must have just arrived? We were all hoping that you were safe and sound." Knowing that she asked about the Commander, her face changed to despair. "Have a seat," she said as she came around her desk to sit in a chair next to hers.
"I've been back for a few hours," Sam replied. "There's a lot to catch up on." She took a seat and turned to the doctor. "So, how bad is he?"
"His prognosis is not good. First, he had a heart attack during the conference. Then, another one in sickbay. Right now, he is in a coma and I doubt he will wake up. His brain functions are lower than normal and we don't have a cure for this. If he ever wakes up, he will not know anything...it is more like having amnesia. There is a strange virus he picked up that must have reached his brain before he had any symptoms...a silent killer, you can say. I'm sorry about this. We did the best we can."
"Understood," Sam said quietly. "Have you made arrangements to transport him to a planet where he can get the treatment he needs?"
"Not yet. I was waiting till you got back...," she got up and went to the replicator. "Would you like something to drink, Captain?"
"No, thank you," Sam said. "Make the arrangements for when we leave this sector. What can you tell me about Lieutenant Jaxara and Corporal Shintaku?"
Getting her cup of tea, she came over and sat in her chair behind her desk. "The Corporal is stable for now...we did major surgery on her back, so I won't know how the outcome is until 24 to 48 hours." She shook her head, "Lieutenant Jaxara died a couple of hours ago."
"Gunny Tramira told me about Jaxara," Sam replied quietly. She was still not sure how to take the news. "Keep me informed on how the Corporal is doing -- and on Commander Sinclair." She sat back in her chair. "How are you doing?"
Leanne took a few sips of her Earl Grey tea before she answered her. "Just tired but I can manage. We are both working our rear ends off to save everybody...Doctor Hart mostly." She studied the Captain's face, "What about you? You didn't get injured while being captured?"
"No. Dumped in a cellar, but unharmed," Sam replied. "Lorne and Chichire got the worst of it. You and Doctor Hart are doing a great job. Is there anything you need from me?"
"Well, that sounds better than getting beat up. Thank you, Captain. I really don't have anything that I might need, but I'm glad you stopped by." Doctor Bowen set her mug down on her desk. "I'll let you know of anymore information that comes with the injured, that just arrived in sickbay."
"Thank you," Sam said, standing. "I'll stop by and see Corporal Shintaku before I leave."
"Sure, no problem. I'm glad to see you back," she said with a smile.
