"Please state the nature of the medical emergency," the EMH said after it was activated.
"Never mind the emergency...I need you over here, STAT," Jason said without looking at the EMH.
The male EMH came over to look at the thing on the back of the female's head. "What is it? Shouldn't we move it?"
Jason shook his head, "Look at the screen and tell me if this could be safe to remove. This is attached to her spinal cord and..."
The EMH moved in closer, almost pushing him out of the way. "Get me the scanner and set it to a higher frequency, um, what is your name?"
"I'm not a nurse...I'm Doctor Hart and I have activated you to see if you might be able to remove this." He picked up the instrument and handed it to him. He must have forgotten who I am, he thought.
The EMH scanned the neck. "It's possible." After the sound setting was displayed, giving off a high frequency. He looked over at the monitor on the viewscreen. The thin attachment to the nerves went dead. "Now, we can remove the device without damage," he said.
Jason was astonished as he watched the EMH do the work.
The device was slowly removed from the woman's neck and Doctor Hart took it from the EMH's hand to put into a container. The EMH inspected the redness caused by the device being tight to her skin. He left the biobed and came back to put some ointment on the area. Looking up at the viewscreen, "Everything is normal...vitals have changed a little and I assume it is normal for her species."
"Thanks. That's all I need...computer, deactivate the EMH," Jason said. After the EMH disappeared, he glanced down at the woman that was still unconscious. Then, she started to move a little.
It didn't take long for Lumiya to come too. She gently started to open her eyes but quickly enough shut them as she wasn't use to the lights in the sickbay. "Where am I...?" She asked as she tried to open her eyes again. There was a sharp pain in the back of her neck. "Ow!" She brought her hand to the back of her neck in the area where the pain was.
Jason grasped her wrist before she touched the red area on her neck. "You are in sickbay on board USS Calypso. Don't touch your neck...there is some ointment on it to help the redness. Did you know of this device," he picked up the container to show her, "was on the back of your neck? It was attached to your spinal cord."
"Calypso....?" She repeated after the doctor with a hint of confusion in her voice. "What am I doing on the Calypso...? And what are you talking about...?" She asked as she finally opened her eyes fully. She lifted her head off the bed to look around and truth be told she was in sickbay on the Calypso. "What's going on?"
"Can you tell me what you remembered last?"
"I was in my office with Lieutenant Tovan. After he left I returned to the briefing room and then the next thing I know I am here." Lumiya responded as she looked at the doctor.
He hit his combadge, "Lieutenant Tovan, you better come down to sickbay. Doctor Hart out." Jason looked at her, "Stay where you are. I just called someone down to talk to you about the situation. So, do you have any headaches or blurred vision?" He picked up the tricorder to read her vital signs.
"Lieutenant Tovan..." She said it softly as she laid there in the bed looking at the ceiling. She was still very confused to what was going on and how did she end up on this vessel hopefully with Delon making his way down a lot would be answered. "No, just this pain in my neck..."
Doctor Hart picked up a hypospray and put in a container with liquid. "I'm going to give you painkiller to help the pain in your neck." He touched the side of her neck with the instrument until the hissing sound stopped. He put the hypospray away and crossed his arms. "So, you don't know anything about this device on the back of your neck?"
She closed her eyes as she felt the cold surface of the instrument on her neck. She winced a little bit as she felt the medicine enter her body than opened her eyes looking at the doctor. "No, not a thing...what is it?"
Seeing that she is confused, he gave her a quick smile. "Before I go on, I am Doctor Jason Hart, medical officer of USS Calypso." He looked at the device, "I'm not an expert on this kind of thing. So, I was seeing if you might know. It looks to me that someone implanted this." He looked over at the door when someone walked through, finding it to be Delon.
She gently shook her head. "No, I haven't a clue to what that device is..." She responded than closed her eyes. "Maybe you can tell me why I am on this vessel...?" She wanted to know what was going on and as nice as the doctor was trying to be she was becoming irritated.
"Maybe I can answer that question." Delon said as he stepped closer to the biobed. "How is she doing doctor?" He asked as he took his attention off Lumiya and over to Doctor Hart.
"She is doing good. Our EMH sucessfully removed the device without any damage," he handed the container to Delon. "Maybe you or someone can find out what this device is. It was attached to her spinal cord. I'm assuming that it controls her personalities or her functions."
"Thank you Doctor, I will have the device examined right away." Delon took the container from the doctor. He took a quick peek at the device than looked over to Lumiya who was lying on the bed. "Is she well enough to move?"
He picked up a circle device from a near-by tray. "I will attach a neurocortical monitor, that is if she stays on the ship, then she can be free to move around." He looked at the red-headed lady, "This medical device just monitors your vitals like your heart rate as well as your brain waves. If something goes wrong, it will alert me. Are you okay with that?" He glanced at Devon, "She can go as long as she wears this and that she feels up to it."
Lumiya had remained silent while Delon and Doctor Hart spoke. She was slightly irritated so she kept her mouth shut in order to keep herself from saying anything she might live to regret. She nodded as she doctor went to place the device. "As long as I get some answers..."
"Don't worry Doctor; we don't plan on going anywhere off the ship. At least not at this point." Delon reassured the doctor.
"Okay," he gently attached the device to the lady's left temple and turned it on. "Don't go off dancing with her either," Jason said as he looked at Delon, joking. "Well," he looked at Lumiya, "the sedative should be working now for the pain. If you have any headaches or any dizzyness, come see me, okay?"
"Okay...Thank you." She said as she sat up from the bed and looked in direction of Tovan. As Tovan went to help her she pushed him away and got down on the floor by herself.
Delon looked at the doctor and shrugged his shoulders. "Thank you Doctor, I promise I won't keep her out too late." He nodded to the doctor and they left sickbay.
