Braxton was almost foaming at the mouth as the channel was cut. "Hit them with everything we have!" he screamed at his men, hitting one in the back of the head so hard that he knocked the man out. "I want that ship! I want it now!" Shoving the man from the control panel he began to move his own vessel, bumping into the very mines that he had placed, making them attach to his ship. "Drop the core and full speed ahead! Ram them! MAKE THEM PAY!"
[NEW]
Kaj hadn't been sitting idle to say the least, but he had quit using standard patterns long ago in light of the fact that the commanding officer of the merc ship happened to be in starfleet at one point. His hands became a blur over the controls, quickly pointing the big ship in the direction of the least amount of mines in conjunction with Karma snapping the wide tractor beam on. Consulting his own readouts and gauges he kept lamenting the fact that the Calypso STILL had only half of its full impulse power.
~Damn mercs, bastards never found a cannon or weapons bank that they didn't like and they just HAPPEN to drop all of them on us, and what the hell is engineering doing, can't they reconnect one simple relay considering we're not much faster than somehey waitaminute...~
Between rolling and jinking as best as he could with the maneuvering thrusters and being jostled by a couple of explosions from the mines Kaj managed to notice something other than the impulse output indicators, and something stuck out to him: they still had warp power. This brought to mind a rather specific tactic to be used in a new fashion to a degree.
His fingers moved even faster over the controls, simultaneously setting up for a rather complexly simple maneuver as well as angling the calypso back down towards a debris field that was at one point most likely a mining station. The gaps were narrow for most of the larger types of Fleet vessels so they were downright claustrophobic for the Calypso, but it was nessecary to put the ship out of sight for just long enough.
As the Calypso heeled over and the debris started getting much larger than the gaps between them, Kaj finally spoke up, hoping that Jaxara and Karma would at least give him enough leeway if not get the idea. "Hang on, we're going through the debris field, its gonna get rough but keep em busy Karma, I need 90 seconds to get behind that large chunk and out of sight before we execute a Picard Maneuver. With any luck that jackass in that hot-rodded sloop will shoot in the wrong direction!"
"Gotcha." Jaxara said. "Phasers only, saving Torpedoes for the upcoming maneuver." Jaxara added with a nod. "Hah! Bunch of amateurs!"
Jaxara had hit a lucky shot against the Merc ship that hadn't hailed them. Dropping mines out of the cargo-bay was fine, but there was a definite risk to this. The enemy's shields were tuned to allow the mines to come out. That also meant that the mines could be sent back home. A quick scoop of about 17 mines, sent back at the ship at much faster than they had been launched out at, was more than enough to cause enough system-wide damage to drop the shields. A second scoop, of the remaining dozen or so, left the ship motionless. "I don't normally like returning gifts people give me, but that's why I always attach a gift receipt to mine. If they don't like it, they can always return it, right back where it came from. Board them, or Blast them out of the sky, your choice, Commander. And I doubt he will think it's so wise to launch those mines now."
"Let's concentrate on the other ships," Karma replied. "If that ship doesn't stay out of it then we'll just have to destroy it." He turned and scanned the scene again, trying to find a way to end the engagement quickly and without further damage to the Calypso.
In his mind Kaj had simply started counting backwards from ninety from the time he announced his intentions. It focused his higher thought processes on a very simple thing, allowing his fast-twitch reaction and his instincts to focus on the job in hand. So while his motions were a blur and seemingly just short of frantic while still being precise, if one could have heard his thoughts they just would have heard a simple backwards march of numbers by seconds
~31, 30, 29, 28, 27awcrap26...~
Though his focus was unbroken it now had something new to contend with: a rather large chunk of debris in the already congested field. In Alpha they were called "Hobo's", a play on the drifting nature of large free-floating bodies in debris fields that didn't seem to be affected by relative gravitational pulls. Hobos by nature were large but this one had the potential to really do some damage to the Calypso at that particular juncture, and on top of it he had directed every potential maneuvering thruster to give the Calypso an added if small boost in speed, meaning if he diverted any from their current task the trailing enemy ship could close the distance and finish them off in a worst case scenario.
Sifting through many possible ideas he settled upon one that his ancestor Tommi Makinen would have recognized if viewed in the correct angle; he was going to try and flick the Calypso sideways, or at least put the idea out there and hope nobody would argue at that particular rather critical moment. "Somebody blow all port-side cargo-bays NOW! 21 seconds to Picard Maneuver XO!"
