Marek returned to the engine room and found an Orion woman wandering around as if on an inspection tour. He wondered who she was so approached her; though vexed about the Orion's pheromones with which she can control men with.

Other women simply become agitated and develop headaches as a result of exposure to the pheromones. Marek knew all this from Starfleet records. "Hello I'm Ensign Marek Lovok," the Romulan greeted the new comer.

Shalie stopped what she was doing as the Romulan approached her. She assumed by his uniform and his being in Engineering that he was one of her. "Hi..." She replied simply "I am Petty Offi...Chief Petty Officer Shalie Montgomery." She said with a slight sigh once she recognized her mistake. "The new Chief Engineer."

"Congratulations," Marek said somewhat sarcastic but then went all serious. "Seriously welcome to the team."

"Uh...thanks I think..." Shalie said as she noted the sarcastic tone of the Romulan. "Is it going to be weird for you working for an Enlisted Officer?" She asked bluntly. She wanted to head off any potential problems before they had a chance to manifest.

Marek was going to address that next but since she brought it up. "Isn't it customary for Commissioned Officers to assume department head positions above Ensign?" He asked nervously.

"Customary and what is are two different things." Shalie started with an even tone. "The Captain is able to choose who she wants as her Department Heads...and she has chosen a Chief Petty Officer...Now I have no problems with this situation but if you do you might want to bring it up with Commander York...I am sure she can find you a new posting." She finished with a smile. She didn't want to sound weak nor unfair. It was a hard line to cover.

"No problem Chief," Marek quickly said and defensively. "None at all." He started to chuckle as the pun hit him. "I used a pun, both your rank and position have Chief at the beginning." The Romulan said trying to lighten the mood.

Shalie laughed at the Romulan's observation. "Yes Mister Lovok..." She said simply. "That is very true....I am glad this won't be a problem between the two of us."

Marek smiled. "Well we better get to work; anything you would like me to do?" He asked.

"At the moment..." Shalie began. "Just continue with your normal daily tasks. I will be rearranging Engineering a little but until then I just need everyone to follow standard protocols." She may not have been an officer but she had 14 years of on duty experience to back up her plans for the department.

"Aye chief." Marek gave a nod. "If you want some backup for those who may be a little apprehensive taking orders from you," he said.

"I will keep that in mind Ensign." Shalie said with a curtious nod in return. She knew that he was right. She was going to have her hands full with the rest of the officers in her department, but she knew she could handle it...and even if she couldn't she would find a way. She always did.

Marek, satisfied with that gave a nod, "I'll see you around then." He winked before heading to another part of Engineering to work on something.
