Ronnie'd heard the new Chief Science Officer was on board. She was curious to see what sort of person she'd be working for.
To that end, she arrived early for her shift so she'd have a chance to meet Lieutenant O'Connor.
Unfortunately, Jerry was not the type of who would ever arrive early to a shift, unless he was somehow pulling a double or triple-duty. Ronnie would find herself waiting for a good ten minutes, until shift change happened, to find her boss coming up - and even at that at a slow, easy pace with a cup of coffee in hand. He grinned at her widely and chuckled. "I'm gonna go out on a limb and say I'm your boss - either that or I got canned and you're my boss. Well, neither here nor there, you picked a good field. Teal really brings out your eyes, know that? C'mon in." He gestured for her to walk into the office in the Science suite, which looked, well... like a normal Science officer's office. A whole bunch of PADDs everywhere, mostly categorized in some bizarre system that made sense only to the one who'd done to the categorization - in other words they made no real sense at all. On his desk, a pair of custom-kitted tricorders ready for field duty. "So, what's up, Lieutenant? Need to see me, or just dropping by so I can get a glimpse of your pretty face that lesser men might kill for?"
It was strange how this ship was making him more comfortable. Yes, he was still very firmly in the playboy mindset, and perhaps he was even aware of it being a persona. But at the same time, his memory and perhaps even more tellingly his ability to pick up data quickly from his surroundings, the first sign of a high intelligence level, were coming clearer with almost everything he said. And even his comments that, said normally, could have gotten him slapped or worse, seemed either endearing or just funny in the way a bad pun is sometimes funny.
Ronnie sat down and waited for the chief to finish talking. He reminded her too much of some of the guys from back home. Not necessarily a good thing. "I'm Ronnie Lancaster. Assistant chief Science Officer. Since you're the new boss, I figured we should meet," she said.
Jerry grinned and nodded. "Oh, sounds like a plan. As long as you do your thing, and tell me what I need to know, we're all good. I like working with people kind of one-on-one, but having you posted as an assistant will help if we ever get into a real crunchtime. So, yeah... pleasure to meet you. So, what're you into? Physics, chem, biology?"
"Entomology. I like bugs."
He chuckled and nodded. "So, let me guess. You're the girl that scared everybody else by dropping bugs on 'em when you all were kids?"
"No. I was the one that, when all the girls ran screaming outside, went in to pick up the bug and play with is. I usually had a bug around somewhere. I started collecting them when I was five," Ronnie said, grinning as she remembered how many times she'd have to go in and 'save' the girls from some nasty bug that she'd end up taking home and preserving in her collection.
Jerry couldn't help but laugh at that one. "Sounds good to me. If we ever run into any really big bugs, I hope you don't mind if I send you in first!"
"Keeping me from going in first would be your biggest problem," Ronnie admitted. "The odder the bug, the better."
Jerry nodded and leaned back in his chair. "I think we'll get along just fine, then."
"Great. Is there anything you need from me?" she asked.
He chuckled and looked at her, trying to stop himself from actually laughing. "A beautiful woman walks into my office and asks me if there's anything I need from her. Wow... I am really going to like this ship. Thank you for the offer, but not now, thanks. You're dismissed, unless you really like my company... in which case, you can look up my quarters after you're off-duty."
Ronnie stood up and leaned over his desk. "I have a baseball bat and I know how to use it," she said softly. "And I have a snake. A python. Remember that, too." Then she turned and walked out.
He nodded. "I think I'll want to meet him, at some point. Snakes don't creep me out. Besides, constrictors aren't poisonous." Jerry shrugged with a smile on, leaning back in his chair and pulling out a PADD he had been reading.
"No, not poisonous. I keep those in the lab," Ronnie said. Then, when the Chief pulled out his PADD she assumed she was dismissed and turned to go back to her lab.
