There had been a number of crew join the Calypso while they were at Typhon.

Sam wanted to have a look around and get a feel for how the new additions were fitting in.

She stepped into engineering to have a look around. One of the first things she noticed was a young Orion female. A Betazoid, by the feel of her. "Hello," Sam said, walking up to her.

Shalie has just set to work when she heard a voice behind her. She didn't recognize it, which wasn't a surprise as this was her first shift. She stopped what she was doing and looked over her shoulder. She instantly recognized the women from her transfer orders and turned completely around. "Uh...hello Sir." She was a little caught off guard but did her best to hide it.

"Relax," Sam said, smiling. "I've... heard about you and wanted to stop by and say hi. Well, you and the other new crewmembers," she amended.

Shalie relaxed where she was standing as she looked over her new CO. "I'm Petty Officer Shalie Montgomery." She introduced herself. "I look forward to serving on the Calypso." She didn't know what else to say. It wasn't often she found herself face to face with the Captain.

"Sam York. And I prefer Sam or Skipper. I'm more comfortable with informality. It comes from years digging in the dirt," she said, grinning. When you were digging in thousand-year-old dwellings you didn't care as much about rank and title. Besides, she was not a formal person by nature. "How are you settling in so far?"

"Good..." Shalie started as she set what was in her hand down. "That is what I love about Engineering...whether it is a galaxy or a miranda the components are about the same." She smiled as she began to relax.

"I'm a scientist. It's the same in the science department. It doesn't matter what ship you're on, a lab is a lab and field work is field work," She smiled at the other girl. "How are you getting along with the crew?" Being Orion, or half Orion, it might be harder for her to fit in, even on a ship as diverse as the Calypso.

"About like every other ship I have been on." Shalie replied with a laugh. The captain was genuine in her curiosity which was something Shalie wasn't used to. "The male seem nice and the women seem hesitant...not that I am used to anything else."

"That's what I suspected," Sam said, nodding. "A lot of people see Orions as slaves or bad guys." It was too bad more people didn't have the opportunity to work with non-Federation species. "We have a Kazon on board, as well as several Romulans. You're far from alone here."

"That is good to know." Shalie said with a smile. She couldn't help but chuckle slightly. "Trust me Captain...I don't blame people for their suspicions. If I were them I would most likely jump to conclusions as well." She truly did understand. Even she didn't trust other Orions, but that seemed almost in grained in her character.

"That's good to know. If there's anything you need, or anything I can help with, don't hesitate to ask. I'm usually around," Sam replied. She was glad things seemed to be going well for the Ensign.

"Thank you Skipper." Shalie said with a smile. "The same applies to you...I may only be a petty officer, but I will help whenever possible." She gave the Captain a nod.

"The way things have been going lately, I may take you up on that," Sam said, grinning. Sam was never quite sure what was going to happen next on her ship. Things rarely went according to plan. "We tend to find ourselves in unusual situations," she explained.

"Well in that case..." Shalie started with a slight laugh. "I look forward to it...the Marianne was pretty mundane, which is nice don't get me wrong, but I am always open for a change."

"Change seems to be the norm around here," Sam said, chuckling, "So you'll fit right in." She gave the woman another appraising look. "I'll let you get back to work. It was nice meeting you."

"Thank you Sir." Shalie nodded. "It was nice meeting you as well." She turned back to what she was doing, retrieveing the tools off the slight edge in front of her. She glanced at the Captain as she moved away from where Shalie was standing. Yep...I think I am going to like it here...
