Sam had invited Nava to tea in her office. It had been a while since the two talked and Sam wanted to get to know her Chief Diplomat -- as well as talk to her about the upcoming mission.
She set out a formal tea service and a plate of scones, cakes and cookies in preparation for the other woman's visit.
Nava arrived at the Captain's ready room and rang the chime and waited for admittance. She had kept herself busy reading briefs and looking over things to make sure that she was ready for what she could be.
"Come in," Sam said. She smiled when she saw Nava. "Have a seat. I thought it would be fun to have tea while we talked."
Nava smiled "That sounds great Commander." She said as she sat down "How are things going with you?" Nava asked looking over at Sam.
"Things are going well. How about you? And please, call me Sam." She poured tea into two cups. "Help yourself."
Nava smiled and poured a cup of tea "I'm finding my footing I guess Sam. Just trying to put together what pieces of information I could gather from my contacts here at Typhon before we receive orders. According to them, things have been eerily quiet for the last couple of weeks, either that or they can't share the information that they have." She said with a slight smile.
"Yes. Things have been slow lately," Sam said, nodding. "I hope that bodes well for the upcoming mission."
Nava nodded "One can only hope." She said with a slight smile "How has your down time been?"
Sam's smile brightened. "Very nice. How about yours?" She'd been able to spend a lot of it with Damon, which made her happy.
"It's been okay." She said "I haven't done much just been catching up on my sleep." She joked "What do you think of our new home?" She asked looking around the CO's ready room.
"I love it," she said, grinning. "I can hardly wait to take her out and see what she can do." Sam took a sip of her tea. "You're going to be busy on the next mission, so catching up on sleep now is a good thing."
Nava nodded "So I gathered from the staff meeting." She looked at Sam "I really think that I need to be with the first away team and assess the diplomatic situation." She said as she took a drink of the tea that she had "I know it's an odd request and that there is danger, but I would rather I go down and prevent many from getting hurt." She said "I didn't express it very well during the meeting."
"How could your going down in the first group prevent people from getting hurt?" Sam asked. "I was planning on sending Karma and a squadron of Marines down in the first group. You would go down with the second to meet with the leaders of the three factions."
Nava took a sip of the tea "I can assess the diplomatic climate, whether we'd even be welcome. Sam, I don't like my gut feeling on this and if we simply send an armed squad of marines down, it's going to end badly. If I can get them to agree to let us help....I don't know. I just don't think sending an armed squad down first is the right move. Maybe it's just the diplomat in me, people tend to respond negatively to a show of force. Send me down with two maybe three marines and keep a lock on us at all times." Nava looked at Sam "Call it instinct but there is a lot more here than meets the eye."
"Yes, there is, which is why I agree that sending you down in the first group is not the best bet. If there is something going on, you would be a target," Sam replied. "I also have no intention of just sending down a squadron of Marines. Commander Sinclair will lead an away team that includes Marines. He'll do a brief recon of the area and report. Then we send down the main team, also with a squadron of Marines. Once peace talks begin, we may have the option of sending more people to the surface to see if it's fit for habitation. We're not going to take this lightly and we're not going to go off half-cocked. There will be no show of force. With the way the planet HAS been operating, we'd be foolish not to have an armed escort. I doubt the three factions would expect less."
Nava took another drink of her tea and thought for a moment "I guess you're right Captain. I just don't want to upset the delicate balance that is there right now." She said "I guess I'm thinking if I can at least get them to be willing to accept our presence that it will go along way in the negotiations." Nava took another sip "I will defer to your judgment. You have more experience in hostile situations than I do." Nava was willing to defer to someone with more experience than she had, she still firmly believed that she needed to be on the initial away team.
"From recent reports, this is no longer a hostile situation. The Union has made great inroads in establishing peace. We're just there to assess the situation and make sure peace lasts."
Nava nodded "Then I will do my best to ensure that it happens that way." She said "What do we know about the Union? Who is it comprised of?" She asked.
"We don't know much. The leader of The Union is a man named: Cheoin Kabok, a human/Vulcan hybrid. Beyond that, I don't know."
"Well that should be easy enough to deal with." She said "How have they gone about setting up the peace in the area. By force or coercion?"
"We don't know. That's one of the things Starfleet wants us to look into. How has The Union managed to bring about peace in such a short time? It may be that the people of Turkana IV are tired of war. I don't know," Sam admitted. Information from that sector was sketchy at best as there was no real Federation connection anymore.
"That's why your job is so important. We need a good diplomat to make sure everything turns out well."
