[OLD]
He didn't have to be half Betazoid to read where her mind was going. Her body language said it all. "You're going to keep him on, aren't you?"
[NEW]
"Yes." She caressed the back of his neck, wanting him to understand. "In a way I feel responsible for him. I owe him another chance." It was the way she felt about all her crew. She looked at Damon and smiled. Well, almost all her crew. Damon, however, was far more than just a member of her crew.
He sighed heavily after a few moments and ran his hand quickly over his head. "Alright. I can't say I trust his judgment, but I do trust yours. He stays. We'll have to dumb down the charges in order to keep him a local matter."
"Okay," Sam agreed. "And, I'll put you in charge of keeping me safe." Maybe that would help him feel better about keeping Jaxara on board.
His eyebrow perked up "Does this mean I can station a couple of Marines on the bridge?"
"Yes, it does," she said, willing to compromise so he'd feel better about keeping Jaxara. Then she leaned forward and whispered, a twinkle in her eye. "You can even post one in my bedroom."
The corner of his mouth lifted "If I didn't know better, I'd say you were trying to distract me from the issue at hand." He tried desperately not to smile. His eyes betrayed him, however.
"I wouldn't say distract," she said, grinning. "Reassure would be more like it. Then again,' her grin grew mischievous, "the bedroom guard is for purely selfish reasons and I will be very picky who I let take that job."
"The grin fully took over now. "I would hope so. It sounds like a strenuous duty. I know a Marine who might be up to the challenge, though."
"I hope so. I plan on keeping him busy." She was trying very hard not to laugh. "So I hope he's up to the challenge."
Damon's resolve faded faster then Samantha's. His smile cracked and he let out a quiet laugh as he shook his head. "You are certainly something else. Now how am I supposed to get any work done today if I can't think about anything but you?"
"You tend to pop into my thoughts quite often, so I have no sympathy," she teased. "I suppose promising to make it up to you tonight won't help any, will it?" She gave him an innocent smile. "Maybe I should just spend all my free time with you? Then you might be able to focus more on work?"
"If that was an invitation, love, I would be inclined to take you up on it...For the sake of my Marines of course." His brow furrowed in mock severity.
"For the sake of your Marines, definitely," she agreed in mock solemnity.
Damon chuckled again at the absurdity of the conversation. "You are no help at all." He said with a smile etched over his face. "At least I am in a better mood now then I was before coming in. I'm not too sure your day will be much improved by the visit, though."
"My day is always improved by you," she assured him. "However, I can't say the same about Lieutenant Jaxara. I'll go visit with him immediately and see where we go from there. He can't go unpunished."
"No, and nor should he." Damon agreed. He couldn't help but feel that the Lieutenant would be getting off easy for what he did. There were limits to the kind of punishments Commander's of a starship could hand out and they were decidedly less than that of a formal court martial.
"I hope he gives you more to work with than he did myself." Damon said as he reached over and squeezed her hand.
"I'll get more out of him," Sam assured him. She gave Damon a hug. "Thank you. For helping and for supporting me."
"You make it easy, love." He said returning the hug. He quickly looked down to his watch and smiled. "I can have that Marine I recommended report to your quarters around 1400, if you like?"
"I like. It'll give me plenty of time to be sure we're... compatible," she chuckled. She stood and held out her hand to Damon. "I'll walk out with you, love." Having an evening with Damon to look forward to would make her next task easier to get through.
She gave Damon a quick kiss before the two of them walk out together.
