On
GYSGT Hawkes was concealed in a Sniper hide, a shallow trench in the dirt big enough for a sniper team to be below ground level but still able to maintain a 180 degree field of vision. Laying next to Hawkes was Bella, ears twitching at the feint noises of the forest at night.
Through his night vision scope, Hawkes could make out a sniper team approaching his hide. They were good, but not good enough, Hawkes had been keeping track of them for the last 1500 metres.
"Sierra 2, you have been compromised, Return to Base." Hawkes whispered into his comm mike.
Laughing to himself, Hawkes stood up, shaking the extra leaves he used as camouflage from his ghillie suit. "Come on Bella, let's go home." The wolf jumped up and impatiently waited for her master to finish packing up the hide.
"Appalachian Hunting Ground, Terminate" Hawkes spoke to the Hologram Deck computer. Soon the room was bathed in brilliant white light and the four sniper teams stood ready to be debriefed.
"Sierra One, sloppy, you had equipment rattling for the last 400 metres before you were compromised." Hawkes stated.
"Sierra Three, using a white torch to read a map will get you killed everytime."
"Sierra Four, the idea behind using camouflage is not to be seen. Not to stand out like a sore thumb."
"Sierra Two-One." Hawkes now addressed the Sniper Leader for Sierra 2. "You will need to train a new spotter."
"Sierra Two-Two." Hawkes now looked at the spotter. She was about 5'6" tall and solidly built, now that the exercise was over she had stripped down to fatigue pants and a t-shirt. "CPL McCarthy, you are now my #2, clean up and head to my office."
"The rest of you lot, do it again." "Hunting Ground, Commence." Hawkes spoke to the computer before walking off the holo-deck.
